My Kind of Hobbit Hole

by on Dec 8, 2009

Kohara Lodge, located in Arthurs Point, Queenstown, New Zealand, is set into a hillside and its roof is covered in grass. And that’s about where the similarities end between it and Bilbo’s Hobbit Hole in the Shire.

A stone house built into a hill, with glass windows. The Lodge’s architects, Murray Cockburn Partnership, set about replicating nature in the building’s construction. They used local schist, which was dry stacked as much as possible, and recycled railroad ties outside. There’s not a jot of paint on the exterior of the house.

A dining room table made of wood in a room with a wall missing. If you’d like to see more pictures of the Lodge, visit Modern Residential Design. And you want get a look at it in person, it can be rented for your own Lord of the Rings getaway. Via.
