Barbie turned 50 this week which got me thinking about the endless childhood days I spent ‘playing Barbies’ with friends, dressing and redressing my curvaceously perfect plastic Barbie and her auburn- haired sidekick, Midge. Then one day it all changed when my bargain shopping mom negotiated a good price on a used, but still intact, Barbie’s Mid-Century (Atomic Ranch-like) Dream House, completely furnished with colorful cardboard furniture. My life changed in an instant! It was the end of fashion and the beginning of furniture arranging, rearranging, and trading in and out different furniture pieces striving to make Barbie’s interior look like the modern dream home I longed for. I’m sure this is where it all began.
Seeing this ebay treasure brought back those indescribable butterflies in my stomach and transported me right into the basement of Barbara Parry’s real Mid-Century-Modern Ranch on Dean Road.
