How to: Easy and Adorable DIY Pet Portrait Christmas Ornament

by on Dec 7, 2016

This holiday season, a group of the Curbly writers decided to team up and each of us created a simple and stylish new Christmas ornament. We’re calling it the “Curbly Ornament Challenge” but there’s not much competition involved…just a lot of fun, seasonal crafting.

My Christmas tree is filled with my pictures and things that represent everyone in my family. This year I decided to make a little ornament with a sweet picture of my dog. Piper, my Vizsla is getting older but she is well loved and I can’t believe we have nothing representing her on our tree. I love these pet photo pillows so here is how I made an ornament version for my tree.

Materials

  • Needle and Thread
  • Scissors
  • little scrap of ribbon
  • iron

Take a photo of your pet. I simply hung up a sheet over a door, shut the door, and had my dog sit on the sheet. My son of course helped me by keeping her interested with treats.  This was out favorite shot. I took it with my phone and used my phone to make it black and white.

Step

Print your photo onto the iron on fabric paper. Follow the instructions on the package for the paper. I would advise taking all the other paper out of the printer. My printer pulled both through and I had to reprint.

Cut the picture and iron it onto your fabric. Follow the instructions

Cut the shape of your ornament. I wanted to follow the curves of the picture. Remember to leave room for stitching. When this is done, cut the fabric for the back of the ornament.

Place right sides together and hand stitch your ornament. First, take a small piece of ribbon and fold it over. Sew the ribbon loop along the top of your ornament with the loop facing down.

Leave an opening to turn the ornament right side out. Turn it right side out and stuff the inside with a little bit of stuffing.

Once the stuffing is in place use a blind stitch or a little glue to close the opening. (not pictured)

I love how it turned out. She is so sweet, and since she is getting older, I know she always wont be with us. I always want to remember her.
