How to: DIY Scrabble Tile Wood Planter

by on Mar 17, 2021

DIY may not be an official Scrabble word, but for this DIY planter project, it’s a total game-winner.

As you know, Scrabble is a word game with tiles marked with a letter and a point valued from 1-10. And for fans of type and clean design, those little tiles are definitely iconic and full of inspiration. Here’s how to bring the look into your decor with a simple table or desktop planter, with Jessica, Jenna and Jodi of the lifestyle blog j. sorelle.

A block planter with a cactus in it and a capital M and a smal number two on the side.

Materials

  • Wood Block, 3 1/2″
  • Electronic cutting machine, such as a Silhouette, or a craft knife, or a stencil and black acrylic paint
  • Adhesive vinyl
  • Electric drill and Forstner bit
  • Mini plant and soil
  • Safety gear: Gloves and eye protection

Step

Plain wood block is set ready for DIY scrabble.

The key to this project is this simple wooden box, 3 1/2″ square. We got ours at Michael’s, but they’re available everywhere and online.

Step

A drill bit and a block of light colored wood with a drill bore in it.

Wearing hand protection {gloves}, safety glasses, and proper footwear {we held the wood cube between my feet as we drilled}, begin to drill the hole in the wood. If you have a vise or some clamps, now is the time to use them! There will be sawdust everywhere. Continue to drill until the hole is as deep as the plant.

Step

A whole sits in a large round cavern in a square block of wood.

Change to a small twist bit and drill a small ‘drain’ hole into the bottom of the wood.

Step

"Letter m and number 2."

Design your letter and number with the Silhouette software, and cut according to the directions. Or, cut your vinyl manually with a craft knife and ruler. If you’ve got a steady hand, you can just paint on the wood directly with a small brush.

Step

The letter M is written on a green paper.

With tape or vinyl transfer, transfer the letter/number to the wood block.

Step

A plant is growing out of a small wooden block.

Plant the plant into the planter, sprinkle with water, and place in the sunshine.  We chose to walk on the wild side a bit, and planted a Zebra Haworthia, or officially named Haworthia fasciata. We’re obsessed with its triangle-shaped green and white striped leaves.
