Jaw-Dropping IKEA and Semihandmade Kitchen Makeover

The kitchen in Allie’s 1978 home looks nothing like this anymore thanks in large part to some strategic demolition and IKEA. The demo bit came when she and her husband knock down the wall between their kitchen and dining room to create one open space. The wood flooring was removed and replaced with something that unified the expansion. When it came time to furnish the area, IKEA cabinets were chosen


for the base cabinets and fitted with Semihandmade cabinet doors, which are made specifically to fit IKEA cabinets. The highlight of the kitchen just might be the 13 foot long (!) island which they topped with crisp white Corian. Check out what the kitchen looks like now:

Crazy cool, right? To help in planning, Allie employed IKEA’s very handy kitchen design software (and a little PS). This was her vision for the right side of the room:
