How to Make Faceted Wood Place Card Holders

by on Nov 18, 2015

It’s always nice to bring a personal touch to your table top during the holidays. Whether it’s handmade centerpieces, tableclothes or in this case, faceted wood place card holders! I also love the idea of my guests seeing their names on the table – it insantly sends a warm welcome.

If needed, cut your wood to the size you would like the place cards to be using a mitre saw or hand saw.

Create kerfs (slits)  in the top center of each block using your japanese saw (you can also use a hand saw – be careful of your fingers!).

Using your belt sander, sand off various areas of the sides of your wood blocks to create facets.

Sand your blocks using fine sand paper. Wipe excess dust with damp cloth. Rub mineral spirits over your blocks to seal the wood.

Cut thick card stock and simply use a sharpie to write your guests name on each one.

Slide your name card into the kerfs in your place cards and voila!

Having a little natural element, like wood, helps create an intimate and inviting look to the tabletop! The facets in the wood elevate it just enough to make the place cards feel current and modern. I decided that I would also go the modern route this year and use sign letters, instead of the traditional name cards. My guests can simply find the first letters of their names and take a seat! It’s simple, clean and almost gives the illusion that they are floating. Just have some fun with your table top during the holidays! Because really, that’s all that matters most.
