The Lexan family wanted to upgrade the furnishings in their family room, but they are also looking for a new house. This made the makeover a bit trickier as they needed versatile and neutral pieces that would work in their future home. Take a look at the ‘after’:

  1. most of it looks good.however, what’s with HASSOCKS in front of a FIREPLACE? they should go with the CHAIRS.they are a fire hazard where they are,and you cant use them to put your feet up.. and why not hang the TV centrally, over the mantle? the dresser thing between the chairs is to tall.need a regular end table there.thank God you got rid of the cage.good move.i’d have put another low table between the other 2 chairs,as well…where do you put your drinks while you are sitting there? i’d have kept the rooster.he adds character to the room.

  2. ^^^it is such drastic improvement. And It looks like they used/repurposed some pieces. Don’t be so critical. The difference is impressive. Don’t take away from it.

  3. I agree, what a nice improvement and freshness to the room. To respond to the “why not hand the TV centrally over the mantle?” well, maybe the family doesn’t want it to be center of the room. Maybe they encourage family to have “family time” vs. TV time. But for me, it is not ergonomically in the right place. A TV should never be place where the viewer has to look up at it as it places excessive stress on the neck.

  4. The lighting in the ‘before’ photo was pretty dark.  It may have looked better under the same lighting conditions as the ‘after’ pics.  Still, the furniture arrangement is much better, making the fireplace the focal point.  I agree, TVs should be at or below eye level.  If I must have it in the room at all I prefer a closed cabinet.  The lack of places to sit a drink comfortably is an issue, I agree.  But I do like the dresser between the chairs.  It keeps the eye moving – up down up down.  The hassocks??  They are stored there for decoration.  Obviously, if someone wanted to use them to prop their feet, just take it over to the desired location!  You want a fire?  Well, move the hassocks!  Easy.  (and if they want to keep the dog cage in the room after the ‘after’ pictures are taken, there is still room!  So many times the ‘living’ part of the living room is removed to make it ‘photo friendly’ – at the expense of living!)
