Most of our kitchen cabinets probably started out organized, but as time goes on they tend to become more and more cluttered. So today I wanted to share some tips and tricks for keeping your cabinets clean and organized long after you move in to your new abode.

The key is to strategically place each and every item in a specific spot at the start, and then to perform some routine maintenance to keep those cabinets looking impeccable for years to come.

1. The main culprit in my cupboards was always the dry goods. Because the packaging was different for everything, there was no easy way to stack items (which led to quite a bit of wasted space, not to mention frustration). The most effective way to tame the clutter is to transfer flour, sugar and the like to storage containers. Opt for rectangular ones instead of round, too… this will waste the least space. The containers above are from Target.

2. The next thing to tackle is the spices. If you cook often, it might make sense to keep your spices outside of the cupboard altogether, either mounted on the wall or on the side of the refrigerator. This opens up extra room inside the cabinet for less attractive items. The rack above is actually the Ribba picture ledge from IKEA, posted on CasaSugar by reader Stephaniepoli.

3. Next, it’s important to use every square inch of each cabinet. Organizers for the interior of the cabinet can help with this. The under shelf organizer shown above is a great way to add extra surface area to your upper shelves. You can grab one at The Container Store.

4. For lower cabinets, sliding wire shelves or baskets work wonders. Larger pots and pans can be frustrating to take in and out of the cupboard, so adding something that slides can help immensely. The baskets shown above are from Home Depot.

5. A lazy susan is another great organizational item for things that you use often. If you’re a tea or coffee drinker, these can be the perfect place to store everything you need. Head over to Real Simple to see this and tons of other clever organizational ideas.

6. Drawer dividers are an easy way to keep everything in its place. It might be tempting to just throw everything into a drawer, but then it will be impossible to find anything in the future. Check out this and many other genius organizing ideas over at Better Homes and Gardens.

7. And lastly, make sure you get in the habit of putting everything in the same spot every time. Maintenance is the key to avoiding the dreaded yearly binge cleaning that might otherwise have to be done if you don’t spend a few minutes each week making sure everything is orderly and placed in the proper spot. If a spill happens, clean it up immediately instead of letting the grunge accumulate over time. Layers upon layers of grime are much harder to clean!
