Curbly Giveaway: Win a $250 Home Depot Gift Card and 10 Cree LED Light Bulbs

Curbly Giveaway: Win a $250 Home Depot Gift Card and 10 Cree LED Light Bulbs
Here's a bright idea: an energy-efficient light bulb that costs less than $10, looks just like your old incandescents, and lasts for 25,000 hours. No flicker (like CFLs), instant-on (unlike some other LEDs), dimmable, and produces and a warm, omni-directional light. The new Cree LED bulb does all that, and uses way less energy than a standard bulb. This week, we're teaming up with Cree to giveaway 10 of their new energy-efficient bulbs, and throwing in a $250 Home Depot gift card as well! Read on to find out how to win!

We got a few of these new bulbs to try out, and we'll do a more in depth review next week. But for now, here are some interesting facts about this new technology:

It's a normal-shaped bulb.

Yep. A normal shape means a normal light distribution. Just like you're used to.

Normal shaped. Normal light.

It has a 10 year limited warranty.

If it doesn't last for 10 years (based on 6 hours a day, 7 days a week), they'll replace it. Try getting that on a 60W incandescent.

It lasts 25 times longer than a standard bulb.

Normal bulb = 1000 hours. A Cree LED bulb = 25,000 hours.

It's instant on; instant full brightness.

When you flick the switch, you want the light to come on. Like, right now. You don't want it to flicker for five seconds first, like most CFLs.

Cree LED light bulbs

It's mercury-free!

What? Compact fluorescents have mercury in the ballasts? Yes! They do! Toxic mercury. In your CFLs! No fun.

Who's Cree?

Right. You probably haven't heard of them, because until now, they've made mostly commercial lighting products for big retailers, warehouses, and even the Beijing Olympic games.

The reason why I would like to try CREE BULBS is to save money on my electric bill, more than anything else.

I also would like to try them because LEDs will out last any other kind of light bulb hands down....which also saves me money because I won't need to buy replacements as often.

One thing you & your readers should be made aware of in reference to CFLs...

CFLs have a reputation of exploding for no apparent reason.

As a firefighter, I see about 4 or 5 instances where the CFL has exploded & caught the house on fire...I have seen adults, as well as small children get burned & traumatized by exploding CFL bulbs.

I encourage everyone to remove any & all CFL bulbs from their home, & replace them with anything but CFL bulbs. I have not seen evidance of tube lights exploding, only the compact ones(CFLs).

I would love to try these! I currently have some of those curly energy efficient bulbs in my basement/family room. I love that they're energy efficient, but it takes sooo long for them to brighten up. Also, the light gives off a weird hue, kind of like my office at work. And if I'm at home, work is the last place I want to think about!

I would like to try these!  I do not currently use led bulbs because no matter what the package says they always seem to produce a light thats too cool for my liking.  I also have dimmers on almost every switch in my home so i like the fact that these are dimmable.  My room mate never turns the dimmer switch off completely so these would be great to save energy he is currently wasting!  Pick me!!
