How to: Make Elegant Chocolate-Dipped Oreo Valentine Cookies

by on Feb 8, 2013

Dipping Oreos in chocolate and decorating them is more crafting than cooking. It’s lots of fun, and the results are amazingly beautiful. Lately, I’ve been dipping a fair share of Oreos, so I thought I’d pass on along a couple of super easy and fast projects just in time to wow your Valentine. The first one is Elegant Oreos; the second is Inside-Out Golden Oreos.

Before we start, know that you can make as many or as few of these cookies as you want. Just keep in mind that 2 ounces of chocolate is enough to cover about two cookies, so just plan accordingly. Or if you don’t, no worries! You can just melt more chocolate!created at: 02/07/2013

Supplies for both projects:

  • Oreos, any flavor you like
  • chocolate chips, white and milk chocolate
  • Cake Mate Cupcake Gems Perfect Pearls (found in the cake decor aisle of your super market)
  • Cake Mate Cupcake Gems Glitter Gold (found in the cake decor aisle of your super market)
  • Tiny heart-shaped fondant cutter (mine came from a Wilson heart set that I found at Michaels)
  • Crisco (Yeah, really. Crisco)
  • a small glass bowl
  • measuring spoons
  • fork
  • wax paper, aluminum foil, etc. upon which to cool and decorate cookies

Elegant Oreos

First, put your white chocolate chips into your glass bowl. You’ll want to add 1 teaspoon of Crisco to each 2 ounces of chips. Melt these in a microwave on high for 20 to 30 seconds. Take the bowl out, mix, and pop in the wave for another 20 to 30 seconds and mix again. Return to the microwave for 20 to 30 second intervals and checking OFTEN so the mixture doesn’t burn.

Drop one whole Oreo into the mixture and coat thoroughly.  Lift the Oreo out with a fork and tap at the edge of the bowl to settle the chocolate. (Please excuse the picture of milk chocolate. Although you can certainly use it if you prefer it over white chocolate.)

Lay the cookies on the wax paper, and, while the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle with CakeMate Cupcake Gems Perfect Pearls and Glitter Gold.

Besides being a perfect Valentine sweet, I could see serving these at a bridal shower or even a wedding.

Now for the Inside-Out Golden Oreos.

First you’ll have to turn your Oreos inside out. To do this, simply twist them apart.

Next, using your tiny heart cutter, cut out a heart from the center of the frosting. If you find the frosting too sticky, just pop the Oreos into the refrigerator for awhile; it’ll firm up.

Don’t worry if the frosting ‘splits’. Mine did every time, but if the frosting is firm you can just nudge the split back together. No one will ever know the difference. See?

Lift the frosting off the cookie in one piece. If your cookies are coolish, the slab-o-frosting will come off on its own. Also, ease the heart inside the cutter free. This might be a little bit trickier, but if the heart gets mishappen, you can use a butter knife to get it back into shape.

Set your cookie parts aside, and using the milk chocolate chips and Crisco, melt them as you did the Glittering Oreo Cookies.

Dip your cookie halves into the chocolate and set them on the wax paper.

While the chocolate is still soft, center and place the frosting pieces back onto the tops of the cookies. (If you’ll notice, one Oreo has now become two cookies.)

Finally, sprinkle the Glitter Gold into the center of the heart ‘hole’ (for lack of a better term), and let them cool completely.

To decorate the little heart cookies, wait for the chocolate to harden completely. Re-heat the leftover chocolate in your glass bowl and roll the edges of your cookies in the chocolate and then roll them again in the Glitter Gold.
