Bookworm: Small-Space Container Gardens

Bookworm: Small-Space Container Gardens

No garden? No problem. Fern Richardson of Life of the Balcony fame shows us how to have an enviable garden without the acreage in her title Small-Space Container Gardens from Timber Press. Organized into 9 tidy sections, we cover everything from flowers to herbs, from shady patios to sunny decks and everything in between.

We start with the basics of garden design--including color, containers, furniture and such--and then head right into working with our own individual climates and exposures, attracting wildlife (in the form of birds and bees), cultivating vegetables, growing succulents, planting for privacy and making vertical gardens. Chapter 8, Green Thumb Crash Course, is imperative for any tiny and/or container gardening success. We end with a handy troubleshooting guide that will help dissuade pests and protect from diseases.

One point of particular interest not usually seen in books for petite gardens is the inclusion of garden blueprints for small outdoor spaces like balconies, patios and porches. Follow them to the letter using Fern's suggestion or use them as inspiration to re-define your outdoor space.

Another point that CANNOT be overlooked are the fun DIY projects like Cheap Pot Upgrade 101, Garden Under Glass table, Mini BBQ Herb Garden and Mod-Minimalist Bird Feeder (come back Monday to see how to make one!), among others.

Finally, as a photography enthusiast, I need to say something about the images included in this title. They are gorgeous and just one more reason to add it to your gardening book collection. And if you have a tiny outdoor living space that could use a shot of life, so much the better.

You can find Small-Space Container Gardens from Timber Press at Amazon for about $14.
