How To: Make a Volkswagen Bus-Inspired Bunk Bed and Playhouse!

Ah, the old Volkswagen Bus.  This iconic vehicle holds a special place in my heart--some of my earliest memories of family vacations and road trips are attached to this trusty hunk of metal (ours was a brilliant turquoise color)!  Needless to say, I would have loved this VW Bus bunk bed/playhouse combo as a kid.  Heck, I'd love it now!

Whether you want to build one for pure nostalgia or actual need, Instructables user Uptonb offers all the instructions you need to get started, including a 3D sketchup of each step of the construction.  Check it out right here!

So, while we're on the subject, are there any other Curbliers with a special fondness of old Volkswagen buses?  Did you grow up with one, own one, dream about owning one?  Share your stories in the comments!

How tall is it

Thank you Uptonb. I'll go check that out.

If you go to the instructables website where the van is published there are pictures of it knocked down to show how easy it can be moved into a room.  It only took about 10 minutes to knock down and then reassemble.  Glad you all like it too.  :)

I wondered if it was maybe built in the garage and for sale now, but I see it was built for a siblings son as a house warming gift of sorts. Still I hope they can get it in his new home. Maybe it's built to be taken apart and rebuilt easily.

DM - I thought the same thing! haha

DesigningMom on Feb 13, 2012:

Oh that is just too cute Capree! I just hope they can get it into the kids bedroom now. LOL

Me too! I have a little VW Bug that fits about 1.5 people, but I'd love to have one of these someday!

I love this!  Dying for an actual VW bus, but this may make a good substitute!
