Painting on Water

Painting on Water

Call it marbling; call it painting on water. Either way the outcome makes for some very interesting art. Some examples remind me of the sky in Van Gogh's Starry Night. The unnamed artist in the video below makes the process look rather easy. (The video is rather lengthy, so I'd let it buffer and fast forward through the 'slow' parts.)

I did a version of this when I was in the 2nd grade. The teacher had us blow bubbles in a dish with dye and dish soap in it and then put paper on the bubbles to make a marbled sort of print. It's not nearly as elegant, but it's a nice project for kids; we ended up making book covers out of ours.

i had a really awesome art teacher back in elem school. and all of our art that we did through out the year was on the same size pieces of paper. well at the end of the year she had us marble paper and we used it to line the inside of our books that we were going to make of all our art work! it was one of the coolest things i have ever done in art!
