Now with Living Room!

By yeye_joijoi

[Okay, after a good 5 minutes searching for the "write a post" function, I've finally found it. Not sure if I could find it again though..... I don't know what's wrong with me lately stuff like this keeps happening....]

Exciting times for me! My 1 (one) room apartment now has an office, a "clothing" area ...... AND A LIVING ROOM. I wish I had before nad after shot but lets just say it's quite a transformation. (even though my apt was a total disaster when I took these photos. I wish I had before and afters but I'm not that organized. As evidenced from the photos...heh.)

All this was triggered by my recent couch/rocker acquisition. Why on earth would I add two more pieces of furniture to such a small apartment, and moreover why would Miss Cheapskate actually pay money for both them AND the truck rental to transport them?

  1. First - the wood finish is beautiful! I can't get over how clean & light the finish is and how delicious the texture. My current focus is on things that are real. Metals, glass, ceramic, wood. I wish I had some more inspiring photos for you.... but just take my word for it. They're lovely.
  2. Second - in these pieces I saw versitility. Though would definitely NEVER re-upholster an actual padded couch, I definitely can and have sewn matress covers!!!!  So I saw my need for change to be satified. Especially now having seen so many of design sponge's before&afters, it's easy to envision these being updated to something cute and inspiring.
  3. Third - They were actually a very reasonable price, as far as couches go. They are lightweight.  And the rocking chair has springs! fun fun fun! And I really really needed something for visitors to sit on other than a matress on the floor. C'mon after 3 years here it shoudln't be like I'm living on the run!!!

Ground to be Covered

  1. The matresses.... don't really fit. Happily neither of them are too small, but especially in the case of the rocker, it's an inch too wide on the sides and sticks out 4" - 5" on teh front ---- which makes sitting on it awkward. I'm going to have to trim them... it will require a tool. Someone suggested to me a filleting knife. Any other suggestions?
  2. The fabric is NASTY. In terms of color it is neutral and not so bad. But the quality of the fabric is just unpleasant. Of course recovering it was exactly the reason I chose them, but now I'm at a loss for what to recover it with.
  3. The backs need cushions! The guy I bought them from had identical matresses for the back, but I am horrified at the idea (... of covering up so much of the wood, of course!!), and he admitted they weren't all that comfortable. My plan is to get some large pillows and then a couple smaller accent pillows (NOT the one pictured!!! noooooo). The classic accessorizing to give new life, yes.

A very theoretical pillow scenerio....

Green might not be the best choice with the red walls.... but my landlord would probably be thrilled if I painted everythign back to white. There would still be the poppy curtains to contend with.

DONE CUSHION#1!

Well almost done. I ran out of thread so the only edge that is topstiched is the front. But I still have to do the rocker so I will pick up more thread and that should be plenty! Thanks for all your help on this! It really gave me the confidence to tackle it all in one go.

(She looks a little bare though. I'll have to get on those pillows ASAP.)

Aren't you so proud of the fact you can do it yourself and not pay somebody way too much to do it?  Now you can make cushions for everything.  I'm impressed with your focus.
