Recycle Old Window Weights-Uses?

Hi There,

I am proud to announce that I have finished installing my first replacement windows (10 now, more later this yr) in my foreclosed "Carnie Crackhouse". I had to replace the original 1934 single-paned leaking, high maintenance windows.  Purists and maybe most designers would be mad/unhappy but I was willing to trade real wood for low/no maintenance in this case, in my part of the world.

Anyway, have (40) window weights and looking for alternate uses.  Otherwise I'll just salvage at scrap yard.  Only can think of using them as light small fishing boat anchors.  Anyone want 'em?  But shipping would be a b**ch.  (Maybe I said bunch).  Ha!

Here's pics of before, during and after as well as weights on my old, existing linoleum art deco floor in kitchen.  There is solid oak underneath that I will be restoring later.

After:

Pile of weights:

Before:  (2 panes were actually missing...zero paned windows?)

Hello my name is Bernard. I have recently come to acquire 20 or so old window weights. I would like to sell all of them, I have a great price for 1-8 and price breaks for any number above 8. My prices are cheaper than any ads on eBay!! If interested please contact me at bbrunetti1@my.stlcc.edu
Thank you,
Bernard

I sent you an email late on 5/31/12 through craigslist and you haven't responded. Maybe you didn't receive it. I see that your listing on craigslist has been removed. Are the weights still available? If so, please contact me at doug_newman@aol.com.  Thanks Doug

Hi, Doug,

I just added them to Craigs List in the Maryland area so you can reach me via that site.  The posting id is 3049443328.  Glad these will find a new home!  --Cindy

Cindy wrote on May 26, 2012 that she had window weights in Maryland for anyone for the cost of shipping.  I am in Virginia and have a need for eight window weights that are 8 to 10 pounds each for a restoration project.  How can I get in touch with Cindy?

Cindy on May 26, 2012:

Try this again -- I have window weights in Maryland.  You could have them for the cost of shipping if you want them -- we just don't want to throw them in the landfill.

John in Orchard Park, I would love you have your window weights!  I've been looking for some.

Pattie on Nov 20, 2011:

Hi,

Wondering how much you would have to have for the window weights?

I've been looking for some.

They make excellent weights for anybody who puts out trot lines.

Vanessa on Mar 08, 2011:

Your windows look very fine. Are you using those modern spring weights. I am a traditionalist so prefer wood for windows but they have to be made of hardwood (teak). Not exactly good for forests but pine rots in 10years and its the labour that costs. Plastic won't hurt anything but my old houses in UK and Eire wouldn't look right using it. I bought the expensive weights and the window slides up and down easily and safely now.

I have some window weights I found in my dads garage. If anyone has use for them let me know. dgallo6@bellsouth.net

Fiannly found a home for the window wgts.      Put an ad on Craigslist and sold them a local duck hunter for $25 for the whole lot.   He uses them for anchors for his duck decoys.

Vanessa Alford on Nov 09, 2010:

What a pain. I'm having to fork out £50 for two 12lb weights.  Cost of posting two heavy weights to UK would cost the same.  My house is 1780 so must get the weights right now as my decorator is soon doing the job of painting the windows.  There is rubbish on EBay.

No doubt yours were put in the bin.

John in Orchard Park, NY on Jun 20, 2009:

Well we just had 18 Pella replacement windows installed.   Our house is 100 yrs old and we took out all window wgts.   I too now have a pile of them in my garage - they look exactly like yours.   So wondering what to do with them.

I have one that is made into a dachsund style dog.  I bought it at an art show many years ago.  I hope you can find some creative sculptor to re-cycle them into art!
