Do you not love this headboard? I've been imagining it and it suddenly appeared. I think it's DIY-able. It could be if I knew for sure how to secure the leather strips on the back side.

Once I delved into the site from which this photo came, the light bulb went on. What do you expect from Coastal Living's Ultimate Beach House decorated by surfer-turned-designer to the stars, Tim Clarke? You just have to check out his west coast cool style  here. He must have been thinking about a lot more than catchin the perfect wave. His style is very cooooooool.

However, I just need to make that headboard.

where would you get the leather strips at a reasonable price? I was going to take a look at leather blends. Otherwise, this headboard could potentially be $400-700 for materials. Yikes! Does anyone have a discount leather or alternative leather whole seller to recommend in Los Angeles. I was gonna hit the fashion district, possibly.
Really beautiful. I wonder if you could use recycled leather belts for this type of project? The buckels would add extra intrest.

You can simplify the connection by (if using a metal frame like this one) buying a $8 (Menards' in Minneapolis price) Rivet gun at your local hardware store/home improvement center.  A rivet or two through the leather into the metal should hold just fine (as long as the leather is thick enough there will be no tearing, or losing tightness of the weave).  You'll just need to do a bit of preplanning out where the leather straps fall and some pre drilling the metal.Just make sure you're using long enough rivets.

ahhh! I see. You'd need some patience for that weave.

The leather straps appear to be stitched in loops at the ends, then the metal fed through - but I can't work out the corners, which seem to be welded!  Maybe Tim will spill the beans?
