Pebble Mat

Just finished this mat to go with my Bathroom Redo. It has a peculiar providence, I was mooching around the CB2 website, doing a little window shopping and I spotted this fellow for $39.95 created on: 07/15/08

Me: 'Hey, I had that idea too!' I just didn't get around to doing it!"

My Sweetie: "So you're saying they stole your idea from inside your head?"

Me, kinda indignant: "YEAH"

Him: "Would you like me to make you a tinfoil hat?"

Crazy aside, here's how I made the mat.

I used:

  • 1 rubber Welcome mat
  • 4 bags of river rocks
  • some contact adhesive

All from the Dollar store.

I smooshed down the glue then arranged the rocks. Not hard at all. In retrospect I think it would have been better to start in the center and work my way out. It's also probably best to let the glue set for a good 24 hours before walking on it.

The only difficult part for me was to not try and arrange the rocks too much, I didn't want straight lines or uniform colour, but it's hard to let go of the whole symmetry thing. I think it turned out pretty organic looking though. It feels really lovely on bare feet and the rocks get shiny when they are wet. created on: 07/15/08

I haven't had any problems with slipperiness... yet.

Love this! I have always loved rocks, pebbles, all the way to boulders. I have made rock gardens & walls from found rocks. This will be fantastic, adding nature to the inside

Just wondering if the rounded rocks make an uneven surface that could be unsafe to stand on and maybe a trip to the beach would be better--flatter rocks?

This sounds like a great idea. Can you use this pebble map for outdoors, like in front of the front door so people can scrape off the snow before entering? I buy these welcome mats and with the wind we get here, they blow off the front porch easily. Sometimes I find them, sometimes I don't.

For those who have trouble getting the rocks to stick - I suggest Goop or E-6000 glue. Both can be found in any Walmart, craft store, or hardware store. Also, BE GENEROUS WITH THE GLUE. Expect to use several tubes of it.Get a good puddle of glue on the mat and smoosh the rocks into the puddle. I like these glues because they are strong and impervious to heat and water.

Blonde your ideas are great with one exception. Your comment on picking up river rocks "duh to those that bought rocks" was rude. Some people do not live in an area with access to the river.  For the person that posted this idea thank you! It looks wonderful and I can't wait to try it :) I think I will also look into Whitewater Woman's idea of the rocks attached to webbing. That sounds like an awsome idea as well. Thank you for sharing :)

LOL @ the dollar store flooring in that last picture... The previous owner of my house put the same flooring in most of our house also. I may have to try making these mats some time they look good.

Also, these stones are found already stuck together on webbing at Lowe's in the kitchen/bathroom tile department. Someone mentioned using absorbant rocks. Probably not a great idea since it would be more likely to grow moss and mold.--Not a frequent crafter anymore, but a real River Rat.

I made this! Looks awesome. Went to the home depot and ask for the best glue for rocks and rubber (for those who are cluless about the glue). It was not all found at dollar store. I think I spend only like $10 though. I found rocks at the river (duh to those who bought rocks). Looks amaing!

This same idea was used for a boot tray for the entrance way so that it looks organic and lets the boots dry with a cleaner look.

does it get moldy down in the cracks between the rocks?

Although it was looking terrific, it was a total fail!  FIrst off, the bag of rocks at the Dollar Tree did not cover much of the mat.  I had to buy 10 bags....$10.00.  But after spending all the time making the mat, the rocks all popped off.

hi, love this and want to try it. But what happens when the mat gets wet. Do the rocks fffall off and what isa good strong glue to use. Aslo how heavy is this mat when done?

Where did you get the rubber mat from? I've been looking everywhere online and at local stores (Ace hardware, Dollar Tree, Marshall's) and can't find inexpensive rubber mats.

I am definitely going to try this.  Was at beach today and picked up about 50 pebbles.  All smooth.  I will need to go back and gather more, but when I do I am making one for my shower.  Is this ok to make for shower?  Reason I ask is will the glue stay with the hot water?  Thanks.

brilliant. love. will make!!

I saw these on clearance at Wal-Mart a few autumns ago, but they were placemats. I bought one for $4 and have it under a large mediterannean-looking pot on my plant shelf window-sill.  Looks great!

You could also do this and make stepping stones.  Just use the cheap plastic plant pot water trays that go under the posts as molds, fill with concrete and add the river stones.

I think I want to try this as a table runner (hotpad?) using seaglass... thanks for the idea

My sister has one of these with smaller, smooth, rounded rocks as a runner down her long mission-style table and it has always intrigued me. It totally engages an individual and invites one to touch it and run their fingers along it. I noticed that the back of her is a webbing-type of material. I'm going to re-investigate it and see how the rocks are attached. I actually enjoy the idea of bringing these rocks inside the house to enjoy them, although when you talked about how nice it was for barefeet to touch them, I was rather sold on that idea as well. Thank you for your creativity and insight. I'm very jazzed now. :)

I think this is a really cute idea, did you buy the supplies from Dollar Tree, Dollar General or a different Dollar Store.  The only reason I ask is because I went to Dollar Tree and Dollar General and only found the riverbed rocks.  Let me know if you can, I really want to make one of these.  Thanks.
