Kelly’s Spacious Kitchen

by on Aug 15, 2011

I bought my home three years ago last month, and the kitchen was what sold the entire place to me. After living in too many apartments with tiny galley spaces, a big kitchen space was high on my list of real estate wants.

I desired space, white cabinets (and lots of ’em), a dual stainless sink, and room for a side by side refrigerator/freezer. For me this space delivers big. However, the first major thing I’d like to take care of are the floors. The textured white tiles constantly look grungy, and I’m hoping for wood sooner than later.

The day I closed on the house the kitchen walls were a garishly bright purple-blue. By the next morning they were mossy green! The generic countertops aren’t very me, but they’ll do for now. I’m at least happy with their neutrality.

The one project I took on was replacing the standard faucet with this gooseneck design. I love the removable head that allows me to rinse off dishes and toggle between a solid stream and spray. I try to keep things organized in two sets of canisters on the counter. There’s a small light above the sink besides the four recessed canisters, at some point I’d like to replace the flush-mounted fixture with a more industrial looking pendant.

The kitchen gets the best light out of any room in my home, there’s a sliding glass door out into the yard from the eat-in dining area and there’s a window over the sink. Don’t let the jade plant fool you – I have a black thumb!

I enjoy doing more baking than cooking and I like to keep my favorite cookbooks at the ready. The binders organize recipes I’ve printed out and the colors give a nice pop of color to this corner of my kitchen.

My cabinets conceal a lot of bright, colorful Fiestaware that I’ve been collecting since college. But I also love mixing in white, glass, and metal pieces for entertaining. When I first moved in I thought I’d never be able to fill them all, now I’m slightly ashamed to admit that’s not the case at all!

If you do a 180º turn you have the dining area. My very favorite part of the kitchen is my bar cabinet. This guy sat in my grandparents’ basement for over forty years before I got my hands on it. Lots of sanding and a few coats of glossy black paint made it a perfect place to house all of my barware and bottles.
