Many  books are works of art in and of themselves. Old, worn hardbacks can look lovely as is. However, other titles are less than comely. Take any out of date reference book for example. (Damn you Encyclopedia Britannica!) Those and other ugly ducklings are just waiting to be given a makeover. Here's three ways to breathe new life into books, thereby turning them into objets d'art.

First are burlap wraps, kind of like the ones in the image above courtesy of Restoration Hardware. (Close up below.) Grab some goofy hardbacks, some burlap a few inches larger than the books themselves and a glue gun and get to work.

If you don't like burlap, kraft paper is another option. Wouldn't even need the glue gun for these. Just cut the paper to height and about 6 inches longer than the book's measurements when opened. Tuck 3 inches around the front and back covers and close the book.

This next idea works for hard back and paper back books, and it just might be the easiest and cheapest book makeover imaginable. Just rip the covers off and truss them up with some twine. You can actually buy these bundles at Ballard Designs for 18 to 25 bucks.

Antiqued Book Bundles

Or these from Pottery Barn for $39 a bundle.

Books are valuable because they are informative. Obscuring the information is antithetical to their whole purpose, and making them blankly matchy matchy takes the culture out of your experience of the books, and it removes the books' existent identities (unless they're al the same book, in which case, WHY?). Literature is an art in itself, as is the design on the jacket. If you have books whose covers or content you could bare to cover up, it might be better to donate them to a library, and use the space for something you appreciate more.

This seems misguided at best.

Mave,, I know her people can call my people and we'll get together with your people and...Evil! I'm being evil!

I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money for that.

I love the look of the torn-apart books, but my soul would shrivel to do that to one. Maybe if I found one damaged beyond reasonable use :-)

EJ, I know someone who is actually proud she doesn't know how to sew on a button. She has 'people' do it.

Why would anyone pay for any of these? I am truely amased at what people will spend money on, even those people with out 1 creative bone in their body can surely do these, all of these. Wait, I guess I'm ranting...Sorry. EJ
