Fives steps to turning your hobby into a business.

by on Sep 23, 2010

A bronze cash register.

I can’t tell you how many times people have told me, “You should make those to sell!” Invariably, I ponder the thought, but then I always end the discussion with myself deciding against it. I guess I’m worried that if I did sell my crafts and such that it would take all the fun out of it, which is exactly what Jim Robinson warns

against in his article, “Five Steps to Turn Your Hobby into a Business.” Here’s the CliffsNotes version:

  1. Research your idea.
  2. Create a business plan.
  3. Take stock of your business sense.
  4. Take stock of your resources.
  5. Get free help.

Jim gets into down to the nuts and bolts of each step, some of which are wake up calls, like, “Don’t kid yourself.”

So, would you like to turn your hobby into a business? If so, what kind of business.  Or…have you already turned your hobby into a business? If so, how’s it going? Is it all it’s cracked up to be? Are you turning a profit??
