My New Favorite Polyurethane

by on Sep 22, 2008

A can of AquaZAR paint.

When it comes to water-based polyurethane, I’ve been a Minwax girl for quite awhile. I started using their Polycrylic because it dried crystal clearly, had low odor and clean-up was a snap. But this weekend when I went to my local hardware store for a fresh can of my old standby, I was introduced to Aqua ZAR and thought I’d give it a try. As soon as I opened the can’s lid, I was impressed. The Aqua Zar was quite a bit thicker than the Minwax, and it had even less odor, which I didn’t think was possible. It goes on like silk, and because its more viscous than the Minwax, there’s less potential for drips. However, this doesn’t mean you can just slather it on willy-nilly. Aqua ZAR should be applied in multiple THIN coats. Too thick, and the finish might dry cloudy. It’s also suitable for floor application, which the Polycrylic isn’t. Aqua Zar is available in gloss and satin finishes and in a variety of can sizes, including a handy pint size. For retailers near you, visit ugl.com. While you’re there, you might want to check out their green products as well.

  1. AQUA ZAR works perfectly. Dries hard – never turns yellow. I opened the can and found no odor!
