12 Alternative Ways to Display Christmas Stockings (No Fireplace Needed!)

by on Nov 11, 2015

How does Santa get inside homes without a chimney? He uses a magic key, of course.* But where do you hang Christmas stockings if you don’t have a fireplace/mantel? Just about anywhere, but these 12 clever ideas are particularly noteworthy.

Laura used a shell she scored at Goodwill for a whole $5. Click here to see how she made the NO-SEW stockings displayed.

If you don’t have a shelf, a 2 x 4 could do just as well, especially if it’s tarted up as sweetly as this one found on Shelterness:

An old coat rack lends a rustic touch to these Pottery Barn stockings. (Spotted at Little Inspirations.)

If you happen to have some deer antlers on hand, they might make for the perfect stocking hangers. (No link back to this idea, which I spotted on Pinterest. If anyone knows its origins, please let me know.)

Maegan hung her stockings from a console table, which, by the way, wasn’t damaged in the process, thanks to her clever hidden tack trick.

Sometimes stocking hanging points are serendipitous. Like the protruding corners of this bar cart, for example.

Also unexpected is this idea for stocking garland from Martha Stewart. Not the garland part, but the fact that it was hung between two chairs.

We’ve all seen stockings hung from stately stairway banisters, but not all of us have those. A more modest stair railing, however, can serve the purpose just was well. Charming!

If you’re willing to do some building, this idea from Maiden D’Shade might be the way to go, which can be used off-season as a kid-sized catch-all. It was made with old fence boards, but an alternative might be pallet boards.

And, finally, if you’re really really set on a fireplace from which to hang your stockings, you can always build your own just for the purpose. That’s what Lisa did. A homemade wooden box for the firebox and found logs for the surround/mantel and you’re halfway there!

*DIYing a “magic” key could make for a fun family project. All it would take is an old-looking key, a message to Santa, and a bit of ribbon.
