How To: Make a Stupid Sock Creature

by on Oct 24, 2012

If you’ve read my review of John Murphy’s delightful new book, Return of the Stupid Sock Creatures, and you now have a hankerin’ to create a Stupid Sock Creature of your very own, have no fear, Blincubus Jackson is here! Well, instructions to make one are here. Blincubus has a sweet tooth the size of Montana, and his sugary fixes are causing him all sorts of trouble.

To make Blincubus, you’ll need some supplies. Here’s a quick rundown that are covered more completely in John’s book (it looks like a long list, but most sewers will have just about everything on hand):

  • a sharp fabric scissors
  • general use sewing needles
  • 5″ soft sculpture needles or doll needles
  • all-purpose thread
  • upholstery thread
  • sewing machine (optional)
  • stuffing
  • pins
  • thimbles
  • seam ripper (just in case)
  • craft knife
  • point turner (a chopstick will do)
  • needle-nose pliers
  • a funnel
  • 3 crew socks of similar thickness, stretchiness and fiber quality
  • eyes–this one is tricky as John has a specific method for making bulging eyes that he outlines in his book. He uses t-shirt material (2 to 3 inches in circumference) and two snap on doll eyes (4mm to 6mm). But, as he says in the instructions for Blincubus, you can make the little creature’s eyes any way you’d like. Obsessively Stitching has instructions for eyes that would work quite well. The tutorial also includes instructions to make plushy creatures that are worth a look-see.

As for the instructions, click here. It’ll take you to a PDF of the instructions at Lark Crafts, John’s publisher.
