This month, Curbly is excited to team up with designer and TV host David Bromstad, of HGTV's Design Star and The White Room Challenge. David is offering his professional tips about one his biggest passions: using color to transform everyday rooms into something extraordinary.

I love DIY projects! Bringing a little something special and interesting into your home décor can be easy. One of my favorite décor elements is some fake taxidermy! It’s been popular recently, and it’s easy to do. Instead of focusing on one piece, which can look out of place, I like to buy in bulk! You can purchase animal heads like these at Z Gallerie, West Elm or even on EBay. Choose one wall and arrange 5-10 of the heads in different sizes. Keep them grouped together. I also like to maintain a monochromatic palette. It helps keep the look streamlined and sleek. Here I painted them all white.

I had these professionally lacquered by a company in Miami. But if you want to DIY first spray the heads with a Matte Spray paint then finished them with a White Shiny Lacquer. Make sure to spray a few coats!

You can use a similar trick to bring a piece of sculpture in your home! I found this wooden Buddha at second hand shop. I loved it but the natural wood color didn’t really have a place in my décor. I sanded it down, used wood filler to fill in some of the bigger cracks and then had it professionally lacquered (can you tell I love white lacquer??)

You don’t always have to use white! I love the look of metallic as well. Here is another Buddha that started off as raw wood. I sanded it and went for a silver spray paint that I did myself! Both of these are easy and inexpensive ways to bring some art into your décor.
