How To: Super Easy Mod, Hand Drawn Snowflake Gift Wrap

by on Dec 13, 2010

I love the idea of hand drawn wrapping paper. Each little gift, with a different motif designed especially for the recipient , all lovingly created by hand…

Of course, I can’t really draw. And I certainly can’t draw well enough to risk just creating original artwork directly on a wrapped package. So, I came up with this very easy handmade gift wrap idea that even those of us without the skills can whip up in under ten minutes.  The snowflakes are a bit stylized, reminiscent of both childhood and modernist interpretations, and each one’s just a little different, making an elegant yet obviously handmade gift wrap that draws your eyes across its surface.

Materials and Tools

  • Solid gift wrap or craft paper
  • Pencil
  • Yard stick or ruler
  • Paint pen

1. Layout a piece of gift wrap, and lightly tape it to the work surface. Use the pencil and yardstick to make a tiny dot every 1.5″.

2. Use the paint pen to make a basic four-line snowflake, with its center resting on the pencil dot. Practice your technique just a bit before marking on the gift wrap.

3. Continue making snowflakes on each dot. Once you get into the rhythm, it takes no time at all. I whipped up a 24 x 36″ sheet in about eight minutes – five to mark the paper, and three to fill in the snowflakes.
