How To: Make Your Own Colorful Baker’s Twine for Cheap!

by on Jul 14, 2011

It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with wrapping paper and ribbon (Remember my closet? And yes, it still looks the same, only now it has even more wrapping paper… and about three times as much ribbon!).  One of my favorite go-to, wrap-it-in-a-pinch, easy peasy gift wrapping strategies is the no-fail “brown paper package tied up with string” approach.  The best string to use in such a case?  Baker’s twine.  It’s got just enough pizazz to keep things looking pulled together and charming.  There’s only one problem: it can get pretty dang expensive.  So, what’s a crafty gift wrapping fiend to do?  Make her own!

I spied this DIY baker’s twine video over on The Frugal Crafter and thought it was a pretty brilliant “solution” to the expensive baker’s twine dilemma (or the “I don’t have any baker’s twine and I need it right now!” dilemma).  The video, created by UKmaryanne, offers up a super easy method for creating your own baker’s twine for cheap – and in any color you want!  All you need is:

  • Plain cotton thread (#10 crochet cotton works well) – around $3 for a large ball
  • Permanent markers
  • Metal ruler
  • Masking Tape

When you’ve gathered your supplies, check out the video below!  Also, The Frugal Crafter offers a few extra tips and creative ideas for using your new twine right here.
