Vertical gardens are all the rage these days, but buying everything you need for a decent looking setup can get quite expensive.  Fortunately, where there's a will there's a way (and a cost-effective DIY version): a space-saving vertical garden is as easy as finding a pallet!

Fern Richardson of the blog Life on the Balcony shares this tutorial for making your own vertical garden from discarded pallets*.  It's a pretty simple project that would be a great thing to tackle on one of these fine Spring weekends!  First, of course, you'll need your supplies:

  • 1 pallet
  • 2 large bags of potting soil
  • 16 six packs of annuals
  • 1 small roll of landscape fabric
  • staple gun
  • sand paper

After you've gathered everything you need and acquired a pallet, it's time to get down to business.  Check out Life on the Balcony for the full tutorial and some more pretty photos!

Meanwhile, what flowers and/or plants are you excited to plant this year?  Our yard needs some serious work, so I'll be hitting up the local nurseries pretty soon.  I can't wait!

*Fern makes a good point about pallets: if you're planning on growing anything edible, make sure you find a pallet that has been heat treated as opposed to fumigated.  There are nasty, nasty chemicals in the fumigated kind that could find their way into your veggies.

Tak for deling ..! Nice-Blog

Thank you, Fern!

Don--Actually, I have two pallet gardens leaning against my balcony walls and neither of the walls have been damaged in any way. One has been there for over a year, and the other will have been there for a year later this month.

Subtitled: How to turn a perfectly fine stucco wall into a rotted festering sore in one short summer.  But, hey!  You got tomatoes.

Anon - There are pallets available that have been heat-treated rather than fumigated.  There is a link at the bottom of the post with more info on this.

Pallets contain wood treated with chemicals. That type of wood  isn't supposed to used indoors or near gardens.

Yeah, I really like this idea too and talk about a great upcycle, one less thing to fill our landfills. The warning about the fungicide is really good too, I hadn't even thought of it. Hum...I can think of a couple of places for these and for the concret blocks too, I must get better weather soon. EJ

Oh wow, what an awesome idea. We have five of these from a load of block we got last summer. I was thinking of making a compost cube, but I like this idea better. I know, my bad. I should be composting.
