An Over-the-Moon Birthday

By: Bruno Feb 18, 2011

Our daughter, Ayla, is crazy about the moon (does that make her a lunatic?); she talks about it all the time, and can spot it anywhere in the sky, day or night. Also (unbeknownst to us when we chose it), her name means 'moon halo' in Turkish. So when it came time for her second birthday party, we knew just the theme:

Alicia made these great moon decorations out of craft foam and tissue paper. She just plastered on white tissue paper (and purple cutouts) with watered-down glue and then brushed with diluted yellow and purple paint. The numbers are just hand-cut out of construction paper.

For the cake, I decided to try my hand at baking, using the America's Test Kitchen basic yellow cake recipe, and using some moon cookie cutters and pink sprinkles to do the decorations. I can't describe to you how many things I did wrong while making this (i.e. - 2 cups of flour instead of 2.5, etc.), but it didn't seem to matter to Ayla:

(Delicious, bakery-bought chocolate chip cookies in the background were perfect backups for us grown-ups who wanted a real desert).

What do you think? Any other ideas for decoration/baking for a moon-themed party? Did you noticed the tremendous full moon last night?
