I really like the look of wind chimes, but am not always a fan of the constant noise it makes. At least not when I’m working on something that needs my full concentration. So, I decided to bring that wind chime vibe indoors, without the noise, to create a natural hanging mobile that acts as a sculptural element in the space.

I found the driftwood pieces at my local floral shop and thought they would be the perfect match for something like this. So after rounding up a few additional materials, I made this…

Materials

  • short driftwood pieces, already strung up together (one of these would be enough for the entire DIY)

  • string and 3-5 feet of cording (or rope)

  • 3 copper rounds that are each 3 inches in diameter (mine are from Amazon)

  • 12 inch metal hoop

  • acrylic paint and paint brushes

  • scissors

  • nail and hammer

Start by painting every few driftwood pieces in various colors, with a paint brush.

Once dry, determine the lengths of each hanging piece of your mobile. Then cut down and tie off each piece. You may need to remove a fe pieces of driftwood on each side in order to tie off the string again once its been cut. My pieces are 14, 19, and 23 inches long to give you a jumping off point.

Next, poke a hole in the top of each of the 3 copper rounds. You can do this with a nail and hammer. Then thread string through each hole and tie each copper round to the bottom of each of the three finished driftwood strands. Triple knot and cut off excess.

Then using string, attach each driftwood strand to the metal hoop, keeping them spaced apart equally from one another. Cut off excess string after triple knotting and wrapping around the top driftwood piece several times.

Next, attach three pieces of cording or rope that are the same length (I recommend 1.5 feet for each stand) to the hoop and top driftwood strands, as shown in the photo. Triple knot and cut off excess.

Step

Then, knot those three strands together toward the very top, so they all come together at one point. And its ready to hang!
