Types of butterfly valves

By: Anna ketz Draft

A butterfly valve is mainly used in the processing industry to provide quality shut-off and still have little or no damage to the product at hand. This valve handles products like liquids, vacuums, powders and granules.

There are several types of butterfly valves.

Electric butterfly valve

This is powered by electricity. It provides reliable pressure regulation that is continuous. Pump start and stop surges have been eliminated. This valve has a VFD system that has lag pump control. The electric butterfly valve eliminates any chances of air building up in the irrigation system. It has a simple structure that makes it easy to study and operate.

Actuated butterfly valve

This valve is either powered by electricity or pneumatic force. Pneumatic butterfly valves are either double acting or spring return types.

Manual butterfly valve

• This is manually operated. It is the hardest to control. It is very easy to install and is rust resistant due to the material used to design the chassis.

Installing a butterfly valve should be done carefully to ensure that it works properly and effectively.

How to install an electric butterfly valve.

 First, clean the valve very carefully to remove any dirt, mud, oil or debris from the pipeline, valve, gaskets or flanges. The disc’s sealing edge should be cleaned too.

 Close the clean valve and set it in the required position to prepare it for installation.

 The flanges are the first to be installed. They should be fitted on either side of the pipeline where the valve is being installed. Flanges should be installed properly as they create a seal for the valves and surface for attachment of the valve to the ends of the pipeline. These are mounted on the pipeline ends and tightened down using tension. Flanges are specific therefore you need to install the right flange for the right valve.

 The valve should then be slipped between the flanges. This should be done carefully to prevent scratching the gasket seal on the flanges and valves. Bolts should be aligned to the center then tightened evenly in a crisscross pattern.

 Finally, you can slowly open the valve to check if it has sufficient clearance. Keep doing this until you are sure the valve is completely operational.

How to avoid problems with a butterfly valve

 Butterfly valves are prone to malfunctioning if they have not been installed properly. Ensure that you install them carefully and if you cannot, look for a professional who will do it for you.

 The seat in a resilient-seated butterfly valve should be properly configured. This seat works as gasket and it should be installed as carefully as a gasket would. The seat should be compressed when installed. It should also flow towards the valve’s seat center.

 Ensure that the disc turns freely and can enter the flanges with ease. The disc extends beyond the valve at an angle. If the angle is not right, the disc will not move freely.
