So asks Michael Cannel at Fast Company. The question was prompt by the proposed conversion of the Bell Labs campus in Holmdel, New Jersey. Designed by Eero Saarinen, the property was the Fertile Crescent of transistors and cell phones, which, according to New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, makes it a piece of 'science heritage of all mankind'.

If the conversion happens, the building's seven story center atrium could house an indoor main street with shops and sidewalks. Lofts would be located on the floors above. If the project would go through, it could serve as a flagship for the restoration of abandoned office buildings everywhere. To read more about the project, please read Michael's entire article.

The building is beautiful. Why tear it down to build houses, when it could be a much more interesting place with a little repurposing!
