Shelving

By tygerlilly

I have a room that is a guest room/office/craft space. I am wanting to display as well as create storage solutions through shelving in the room. What are your thoughts on a wrap around shelf 12 - 16 inches from the ceiling? What is your advice in regards to putting shelves above a desk?

i did that in my bathroom, and i still think it's a good idea, but i'm aware that i did it all wrong.

i wanted a shelf that wrapped around all four walls, and i wanted the corners to be mitered (hope i'm using the term correctly), even it would have been much easier to just cut the four pieces straight and let them rest on each other. although i'm sure it could have been done very well by someone who knew what she was doing, that design opened the door for many things to go wrong.

in my naivete, i took for granted that all of my corners would actually be right angles, so when they weren't, the ends that i had hastily mitered gapped in some places and obstructed each other elsewhere. i also marked where to place them by measuring down from the ceiling, which isn't a uniform height despite appearances to the contrary.

but the worst part was getting the brackets into the walls. i killed two or three masonry bits trying to drill six holes into the extremely hard masonry of the exterior wall, and still had to settle for shallower holes than i wanted.

so anyway, do it like i didn't do: if you need to have mitered corners, use one of those adjustable protractors to measure the inside angles, and don't try to install brackets into brick if you can help it. of course, if you know a good way to mount heavy stuff securely in brick, let me know!

I have liked this idea for a long time but haven't done it yet.  I was thinking of running it right on top of door frame to let that be the elevation.  I have some flat, smooth hollow core bich doors that I salvaged that I was planning on trying.  I would have to cut wood strips to fill-in hollow in rear but factory door edge can be front.

I believe one can not have too much storage.  Tho, I guess one can argue that us north americans tend to easily fill more storage w/ more stuff.

I'm curious for ideas too!

I really like IKEA's lack shelves, they're sleek and stylish.
