Has this conversation happened to you too? (Or is it only me...?)

By terryswaler Tammy_self_016_medium

…. Him:  (proudly) I touched up the spots I missed this morning. Her:  Good.  Now we don’t have to deal with it tonight! Him:  Hmmm.  How come I can see where I touched up? Her:  Must be the lights shining funny. Him:  Pause.  Oh boy. Her:  Fear striking.  What? Him:  I used the primer paint.  Not the ceiling paint.  I’m going to have to re-do the ceiling. Her:  Silence.  Raised eyebrows. Her thinking:  “idiot” Her:  that was dumb!  (she’s so supportive) Him:  Silence. Kitchen renovation progressing...Slowly.Feel free to leave me encouraging comments!  (laughing)  »MORE

Kitchen Revelation...I mean...Renovation

By terryswaler Everything_and_the_kitchen_sink_005_large

Last year (yep.  Not a typo) my SO gutted our kitchen.  We are definite DIY'ers and this challenge, although overwhelming, was something we knew we could do.You know how life sometimes takes sudden twists and turns when you least expect it?  What?  That hasn't happened to you?  <laughing>Our kitchen is still in a state of disrepair and we have few $$ to finish it. What will we do?  What will we do?Contrive:I found an entire set of kitchen cabinets (with sliding drawers, countertop, island, used double oven and corner lazy susan cabinet) on Craiglist for $1100.  They're sitting in storage.  I... »MORE

Check Out: Mypantone

By terryswaler 384710229_784f8cdc0a

I know there was a recent post about Pantone by DIY Maven (read it here).I wanted to add a couple of other things that I haven't seen here yet...First -- Pantone has come out with a home dec segment and are producing (as far as  I can tell) all 3000+ colors in interior and exterior paint.  Expect this to be expensive.  But -- they defend the price by saying that they do not use chalk or fillers in the paint and that you get a truer and longer lasting color from them.I have some recent experiences with my dog that... »MORE

Bathroom Vanity DIY Idea

By terryswaler Ebay24_005

This showed up on Craigslist yesterday for sale. The website Vanities of Yesteryear apparently combines old furniture into new bathroom sinks.  Food for thought.  Although I feel mixed about taking a really nice piece of furniture and altering it in that way — but - what a neat idea for something that needs to be brought back to life or is sitting on the curb waiting for you to pick it up and turn it into something new and amazing! »MORE

Things to do with those Paint Chips. It's a shame to just throw them away!

By terryswaler Dws1106_2_e

Original post on my blog Handmade Detroit has created the COOLEST Valentine’s Day Wreath out of paint chips.  There’s a tutorial too.  I want one! It got me started (here we go again) thinking about paint chips.  Interestingly enough, I was at the paint store with my friend yesterday and I was pondering those chips and thinking about things that I could make out of them. I have cut them into hearts and put them randomly in my kitchen windows…and one lives in my SO’s wallet with a little love note on it. Here’s a couple more links specifically to... »MORE

More Color Tools -- Part Two

By terryswaler Color_star_large

I did write about this topic a couple of days ago (and many other times in my blog).  But the subject continues to interest me -- and I'm embarrassed to say that I have never seen the two things I'm writing about today.  It's embarrassing that someone so interested in color could have missed them!  <grin> However, I have overcome my chagrin in the spirit of passing on really interesting information -- the first is an amazing tutorial on color If you are at all interested in color, color theory, choosing colors for projects or for your home -- take... »MORE

Idea for Kitchen Cabinets

By terryswaler 326031156_7edaaf1a2d_m

Our rental house was trashed from the tenant we had to evict — so we had to do some major work on the house especially the kitchen — but couldn’t afford to replace cabinets, etc.  So — here was my solution.  I painted them with roosters.  I found these cool dishes with roosters on them from Sam's Club and took them as inspiration.  Also -- I am currently in love with Clarice Cliff pottery. You can see it in the bungalows and trees in the background.  »MORE

Tools That Help You Choose Colors...for anything!

By terryswaler Sp1

I love color.  But in my house -- using color is a relatively recent development.   So, I've been searching around for things that would help me figure out what might work, what definitely won't when choosing color. When I bought my house the former owner had painted the kitchen and dining room the EXACT colors of Blockbuster -- electric blue and yellow.  It's made me cautious!  <grin> So this might help you if you're like me and are trying not to waste tons of money on paint that is not the color you thought it would be.  (Not that that's EVER happened... »MORE

More about How to Use Craigslist to Get Cool Stuff before Anyone Else!

By terryswaler Tammy_self_016_medium

I wrote about this on my blog --but Erin encouraged me to post this to all Curbly peeps -- so here is the detail on how I use Craigslist.  Hope it's useful!I found this overview on Craiglist at Curbly — and it’s absolutely a great article and completely true. It got me to thinking about how I use Craigslist — and what other things I’d add to this list if I were the one who had originally written it. I’d add: Bring cash only. Even for big items. No one wants to deal with a check. Would you? Sometimes saying... »MORE
