Build a Folding Table
By DIY Maven![]()
A folding table can come in very handy. This little fellow comes to us from Handy Man Wire, who says that it can be constructed out of any wood of your choosing. (Because the maker is using his table on a porch, he built it out of cedar. Stainless steel and brass hardware was chosen for the same reason.) Since you can make it in an afternoon or so, it would be the perfect weekend project. Here's your shopping list!
DIY Air Hockey Table.
By Chrisjob
Full size, and a fraction of the cost. OldSchoolStructure built a full sized air hockey table entirely from scrap, only purchasing premade pucks and mallets. The frame is whitewood, the 'ice' MDF, and the air source? A leaf blower.
"An attached 3D drawing of the project might help you understand this project. You can download it in the Images and Files menu below. In order to view this drawing you need the free application Google Sketchup View » READ MORE
DIY Modern & Simple Pot Rack
By DIY Maven

Doug's wife wanted a pot rack. It had to be modern, simple and she didn't want to spend more than 40 bucks on it. With those parameters, Doug set to work.
Curbly Video Quick Tip: Create a Crosscut Sled on the Cheap.
By Chrisjob
The table saw is the most versatile option for the DIYster, equally successful at making rip cuts (with the grain) and crosscuts (across the grain). When making crosscuts, it's much better to rely on support which holds the workpiece at a 90-degree angle to the blade, rather than the rip fence, which is parrallel to the blade.
Enter the crosscut sled, an extremely easy homemade option for safe and accurate crosscuts on any table saw. This option » READ MORE

DIYable Twig Coat Rack?
By DIY Maven
I've gotten into trouble before for suggesting a designer's creation is DIYable, but I can't seem to stop myself. Especially when I see inspiring creations like this one from Jamie McLellan that was made for New Zealand's Fletcher Systems. Dowels, bits and a drill press.... The steel base would probably have to be re-interpreted. » READ MORE

Get the Look of Wainscoting for Less
By ModHomeEcTeacher
Photo Images: THR & Sons
When we built a home years ago my brother suggested some cost cutting carpentry illusions that gave us the look of custom raised wainscoting panels in the dining room and up the stairway. It's fairly commonplace now but at the time, it was a clever construction cost cutting idea.

The Naked Sideboard, and Other Stuff Spotted at the MIA
By DIY Maven
A couple weeks ago while visiting the Minnesota Institute of Arts, MWT said, "Look, a naked sideboard" as he pointed to Gerrit Rietveld & Gerard A van de Groenekan's 'Sideboard'. Located in the museum's Modernism Collection, the piece measures 41 1/4" x 78 3/4" x 17 1/2". Constructed primarily of beachwood, the sideboard was designed in 1919 but created in 1959. It elevates the hidden mechanics that we don't always consider when faced with a be » READ MORE
Upside Down Sawhorses Table
By DIY Maven
Actually, it's called the Double-V and it's by Zmik. But when I first saw it I thought upside down sawhorses. And then I thought slab interior door and a can of semi-gloss. Via.
Frame that turns into a table.
By DIY Maven
Perfect for small spaces, the Picturetable from Verena Lang goes from frame to table in about a second. It looks like those fabulous side supports are slipped into and out of holes drilled into the legs when they are extended. For a DIY attempt I'm thinking 1/4" rod banged into 45 degrees at the ends. A piano hinge on the bottom and two smaller ones for the legs....hmmmm.
How To: Make a Zero Clearance Table Saw Insert.
By Chrisjob
A custom, zero clearance insert plate for your table or band saw minimizes tearout and prevents those tiny bits from dropping into the blade throat. From Rockler.com, "A zero clearance insert is a substitute for the throat plate that came with your table saw. The opening in the insert is cut on the table saw to the exact width of the saw blade’s kerf, thereby preventing thin slices of wood from jamming in between the blade and the throat pla » READ MORE
How To: Create Spot-On Box Joints.
By Chrisjob
Box joints, also called finger joints or comb joints, are really quite strong and have an attractive, handmade appeal which looks good on, well, everything.
And you're welcome to cut and chisel each one by hand...but, with this easy jig, you don't have to, and unless you're a purist, there's no reason not to crank them out by the dozens. This is designed for a router table, but the same approach would work for a table saw and dado blade.

Who butchered the Baker?
By boopalina and bebe
In August, we helped my dad move into a new home and we subsequently inherited this vintage roadside find. He was going to just leave it behind, but I instantly knew it had incredible design potential. What I didn't know, until finding a little hidden plaque on it, was that it's a Baker cocktail table. If you're wondering what the heck that means...well...you're not alone. I was a bit curious (and Baker-ignorant) so I did wha » READ MORE

Wall-Hanging Plant Holder.
By Chrisjob
The Makezine blog points out this living art/seed starter: a wall-hanging plant holder from Opulent Items. The plants are watered by the included reservoir, and the plants naturally grow forward (out), because that's whence the light comes.
The included diagram (below) makes it seem like they want you to DIY one; which is totally preferable to dropping $250 on a manufactured model.
