Wood Slice Walkway

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-09-28

Katy spotted this wood slice walkway earlier this spring at the Portland (Maine) Flower Show. I'm not sure if it would actually work in Maine--or where I live--where the frost line can be anywhere from 3 to 5 feet, but, man, do I love the look of it! » READ MORE

Couch Arm Cup Holders

By Runeshai

created at: 2009-08-09

Useful, re-imaginative and darkly hilarious blog Good Rubbish came up with this idea as a birthday present for someone in their life: cup-holders mounted to the couch arms where their beloved one apparently loved to keep their coffee mugs while reading the paper.  Some quick and clever DIYing, some scrap wood and a couple of mini-plates (some ash trays might look cool) and they came up with this:

Wood Slice Walkway.

By Chrisjob

"This wonderful wood sliced walkway was photographed by Katy Elliott during a trip to the Portland Flower Show earlier this year. Assuming you had some rot resistant wood, this would be a great use of old or found material."

Completely DiY-able, and a great reuse of available materials.

Curbly Video Quick Tip: Create a Crosscut Sled on the Cheap.

By Chrisjob

created at: 2009-07-06

The table saw is the most versatile option for the DIYster, equally successful at making rip cuts (with the grain) and crosscuts (across the grain). When making crosscuts, it's much better to rely on support which holds the workpiece at a 90-degree angle to the blade, rather than the rip fence, which is parrallel to the blade.

Enter the crosscut sled, an extremely easy homemade option for safe and accurate crosscuts on any table saw. This option » READ MORE

Two Fun Bits of Tree Limb Design.

By Chrisjob

I've always been a fan of the faux bois aesthetic, but lately, I'm digging on a little vrai bois art. These two pieces captured my fancy this week.

wood music

First, this iPod dock made from salvaged wood isn't just a tongue-in-cheek comment on the connections between nature and technology. It actually works. The limb is routed and drilled to make space for the circuitry and speakers. Via.

Tabletop Pinball Game (made from scrap wood).

By Chrisjob

From Seamster's super creative Instructable:

diy_tabletoppinball_cc.jpg"This is a tabletop pinball machine made from all scrap wood and bits and pieces of things I've held onto just waiting for a project like this. The ball is from an old computer mouse, with the rubber coating removed (you could use a marble as well). A crafty person should never throw perfectly good stuff in the trash. Just hang onto it, and eventually you'll find a new use for it down the road!"

Wooden Magnetic Knife and Tool Holder.

By Chrisjob

Wooden Magnetic Knife Holder from Lie-Nielson ToolworksThe on-the-wall magnetic knife block is a safe and efficient way to keep your blades sharp and on hand. But metal surfaces can scratch your tools and look a bit industrial, if that doesn't suit your style.

As an alternative, Lie-Nielsen offers the Mag-Blok an alternative with an all-wood facade. With options in sugar maple and cherry, it's made to fit your butcher blocks, and many models of cabinetry. And at $35.00 for an 18" model, the price is » READ MORE

Wooden Modern Gadgets.

Plastic: it's cheap and easy to produce. And though I dearly love my iPhone, it's elegance is quite different than the classic charm of these hand crafted wooden versions of contemporary technology.

How To Build a SeedHouse/Mini Greehouse

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-03-26

My husband grew up on a farm. He professes to love his fruit trees and vegetable garden. Once he plants, that's about the end of it. I think he really just likes buying seeds. He may very well be the worst gardener/tree grower I've ever seen. This has tainted my desire to plant my own veggie garden, up until now. I'm ready to stake out my own Victory Garden this weekend. How fortuitous to come » READ MORE

How To: Create an Art Easel from a Pair of Recycled Crutches.

By Chrisjob

I know this is weird, but when I was a kid, I longed to break my ankle or a foot so I could walk around on crutches. I know, I know, but the kids always got to leave class early, and everyone did all these nice things like carry their lunch tray....

http://img.diynetwork.com/DIY/2007/01/12/dbor409_1ff_e.jpg

Had I broken something, and were there a pair of 12-year-old crutches in my parents' basment, I'd probably make one of these: an easel. And even though I don't have a pair, the technique could stil » READ MORE

Water Bottle Stained Table

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 02/10/09

Hey all you master woodworkers? No, it's not a flower stenciled on my dining table, it's a water mark left by Mr. Mod and his water bottle. (I have yet to convince him of this.) Additionally, the table has taken a moisture beating with other late night glasses being carelessly left un-coastered.  » READ MORE

How To: Create Spot-On Box Joints.

By Chrisjob

created on: 01/10/09

Box joints, also called finger joints or comb joints, are really quite strong and have an attractive, handmade appeal which looks good on, well, everything.

And you're welcome to cut and chisel each one by hand...but, with this easy jig, you don't have to, and unless you're a purist, there's no reason not to crank them out by the dozens. This is designed for a router table, but the same approach would work for a table saw and dado blade.

Wood, Drill and Yarn Christmas Ornaments

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 12/11/08

Wood, fiber and a drill-why didn't I think of these ADORABLE tree decorations? These are so delicously simple, I can't think of any way to improve on them except maybe to make sure to sign and date them on the back side.   You know those anxious two or three days before Christmas with kids?  Decorate cookies or drill some holes?  You know what I'd choose. » READ MORE
