How To: Make A Curtain Rod

By Homegrown

created at: 2009-08-31I have had these linen panels sitting in a box waiting to be used for months, but when they were given to me by a friend they didn't have a rod to go with them. Instead of rushing out to buy one, I decided to be creative and make my own curtain rod with supplies that I had laying around the house. I used binder rings, rope, nails and picture hangers, and viola! my windows have been treated! First, I made sure that I used several strands of rope t » READ MORE

My, my...how paint pens have grown. What used to put out splotchy, oily messes can apparently now produce thin, clean, consistent lines. A beautiful case-in-point: these custom window films from Kate at Design*Sponge. "In our home we needed some window films to provide privacy, but we also wanted them to let light through. using contact paper and a white paint pen, i’ve created some decorative window films that are easy to change, replace, m » READ MORE

How To: Customize Roman Shades.

By Chrisjob

Every television design show lauds the ease of the basic Roman shade, which can be endlessly customized. Well, fine, but I still don't know how to make one...and those strings intimidate me.

Luckily, I have Jennifer's how-to from Apartment Therapy. "Jennifer took simple, plain and inexpensive Roman shades from Target and completely transformed them with a graphic patterned fabric from IKEA — providing customized window coverings on a budget. » READ MORE

By DIY Maven

created on: 08/27/08

I have a thing about windows. Especially barn sash windows, one of which just happened to be lying around. It was too good not to turn into something, so kicked around some ideas and came up with a wall art/light fixture idea and went to work.

What we used:

an old barn sash window

scrap 1" x 3" pine

a piece of handy board

frosted glass spray

Contact paper

scissor and paper punch

LED light strip

table saw, screws, drill, nails hammer, etc.

Need Your Clever Ideas

By ModHomeEcTeacher

We just made a clean sweep of the greenery and holiday stuff and the same old dilemma is staring me in the face.  I won't divulge how long we've lived in this house, but will share that I have never been able to figure out what to do with these two big sliding glass monsters.  The first image is looking from the front hallway right on through the dining room and smack dab onto the porch.  The second image is in the breakfast area off of the kitch » READ MORE

How to turn a window into a curio.

By DIY Maven

Okay, I had this idea a while back to turn a window into a curio. MWT was up for it, so this is how it went.

First, although I would have loved to get my hands on an old barn window, I bought a new one from my big box store. I decided upon a pine 19 7/8" x 24 7/8" four paned window.

Then MWT made a simple box slightly smaller than the window out of 1" x 4" pine, using half lap joints at the corners and a thin piece of plywood in the » READ MORE

Easy Window Repairs.

By Chrisjob

When I was in 5th grade, I spent a weekend at a monastery with some Confimation classes from other area churches. There was a young lady from another church that was four years older than I was, and completely in love with me. She had very white teeth, and wore way too much perfume...sometimes I catch the same scent walking by a random woman, and I feel eleven again.

On Saturday afternoon, during a break, she managed to punch her hand through a w » READ MORE

Clever Window Cling

By DIY Maven

Strössel Design’s window cling, available in four patterns, provides privacy and style. In rolls of 34 x 98 & 48 x 120 cm (for 20 to 27 bucks from Scandinavian Design Center), the decorative film adheres to clean glass with nothing but static, which means it’s easily removed and reused. Much more tasteful than those holiday window cling decorations, no?

How to Make a Pocketed Window Topper

By DIY Maven

Besides pillows and pillow slipcovers, curtains and window toppers are some of the easiest home decor projects to sew. You don't need to spend money on a store-bought pattern for this simple pocketed (meaning it has a pocket for a rod) window topper.

Step 1: Measure Twice Cut Once

First you’ll need to measure the width of your window. Mine is 24" wide. I’m also going to take into consideration how much my curtain rod protrudes from the wall, which » READ MORE

Help with an in-shower window.

By meandeli I'm in the very slow, very painful process of moving, and the new place has a rather large (for a bathroom, at least) window smack in the middle of the shower wall. Since I'm not one for giving my neighbors free thrills, I need to find a solution to this problem. Currently, there is a very ugly plastic curtain hanging in the window, but it's mildewy and hideous. I'm looking more for something I can do to the glass (that isn't permanent in case th » READ MORE

How do I protect my bathroom window from water?

By ericam

The window in my bathroom is inside the shower. My rental company requires that a second shower curtain remain hung in the shower to protect the window.

This second shower curtain drives me insane. You know how the curtain billows in the steam? I've got that on two sides. SO annoying.

So I was thinking that if I could find some way to keep the water away from the window frame, I could take that second curtain down. This would have the added bonus o » READ MORE
