Easy DIY Floating Frame

By DIY Maven

Adhere clear dots along front of ceiling tin edges (I used eight of them due to weight).  If your tin has chippy paint, make sure to spray it with poly or remove with a wire brush so the adhesive dots will stick properly. Omit replacing the cardboard backing to the frame and allow the wall color be your matte.

Candy over on Junk Market Style scored a vintage ceiling tile at a flea market for 2 bucks. She decided to frame it with the help of rummage sale frame and some snot dots. The result is a very easy floating frame installation. » READ MORE

How To Host a Mod Christmas Party.

By Chrisjob

Love the sound of the jingle bells and the vibraphone playing bossa nova Christmas carols? Love swanky retro decor in colors other than red and green? Perhaps a tiki mug full of a candy cane martini?

Then, my friend, you're primed to host a mod Christmas party.

How To: Fit a Secondhand Sweater.

By Chrisjob

Many a vintage//thrifted/solastseason sweater were patterned with a boxy look that doesn't flatter anyone's figure. But don't place that classy secondhand gem back on the rack just yet. Sarai Mitnick is on top of it.

"My grandmother gave me this gorgeous rose pink vintage cashmere sweater a couple years back and though I’ve worn it from time to time, it was really too big for me and felt really frumpy. I finally took action and could not be happ » READ MORE

Free Papercraft: Mid-Century Christmas Village.

By Chrisjob

The popularity of Christmas village decorama hit the big time during the mid-century modern craze of the post-war United States, but largely, their motifs didn't explore the sharp geometricism of their contemporary era, but harkened back to a more quaint holiday aesthetic of the Dickens era.

Vintage Typewriters in Design

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-10-21

Photo Image: LuphiaLoves

Can you think of anything unappealing about the design of vintage typewriters?  They evoke feelings of long, arduous hours of thinking and rethinking brilliant ideas, plunking along until the last page is yanked from the rollers with satisfied uncertainty. It's old school at its best.  Even if you're not a writer, you can't deny the coolness of a vintage typwriter sitting there all "I still look so good, even if you prefer a boring keyboard". Grab one or two before it's too late. Plus, it's a darned clever way to add a splash of color... » READ MORE

Converting an Old TV into a Chair.

By Chrisjob

From Apartment Therapy Unplugged:

"We've seen vintage TVs turned into storage units and even aquariums to house our scaly friends, but we've never seen such a shag-a-licious chair like this before! It's an image from the 1986 architecture book "Freestyle: The New Architecture and Design from Los Angeles" by Tim Street-Porter"

I guess the how-to goes like this: remove the screen, remove the guts, applied shag, and sit!

Vintage Card Table Turned Wall Art

By DIY Maven

For the last 2-1/2 years I dreamed of artwork for my foyer with a 17 high ceiling.  No extra funds puts a slight damper on those dreams.

Filed in the 'how clever is this?!' folder is Candy's use of an old card table as wall art. She noticed a stack of them at the side of the road. When she spotted the black and white table in the pile, she knew where it was going and what she was going to do with it. Home and on the wall!

Upholstery Teardown: Ugly but Worth It

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-09-02

The students in my beginning upholstery classes never fail to be shocked by how much work is involved in tearing old upholstery off of a deliciously vintage chair. Teardown is bad, no doubt. It is, however, » READ MORE

Mid-Century Modern Finds at Urban Outfitters.

By Chrisjob

The fine folks at Atomic Addiction have been doing a little window shopping...web browser window shopping, that is, and they've been peering into UrbanOutfitters.com, the website of the tries-to-be-too-hip-for-its-own-good-but-still-a-great-place-to-get-all-the-cool-stuff-you-see-online brick and mortar store found near university campuses and other metropolitan neighborhoods.

Among the finds include two 50s-inspired but not kitschy shower curtai » READ MORE

Wanted: Green Velvet Upholstery Fabric

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-08-01

I'm on the hunt for this exact color of green velvet upholstery fabric. The velvet studio sofa is from Nate Berkus' furniture collection for the The Home Shopping Network. Other photos of this piece don't look like the green in this photo. I'm specifically looking for this deep shade of green velvet. » READ MORE

"Real Oilcloth" and How to Make It

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-07-03

photo image: http://mexicansugarskull.com/

Why do they call it "oil"cloth? Probably because the recently advertised "real oilcloth" that is all the rage is made from cotton fabric covered with a petroleum based coating. However, genuine oilcloth, the real thing  grandma had on her kitchen table was made from cotton duck, canvas or linen that was

Vintage Doors into Tabletops?

By charlo

I have these two beautiful vintage doors. I want to turn them into tabletops.

created at: 2009-06-30

I have most of it figured out. The legs will come from here: http://www.tablelegsonline.com/shop/20-htype-legs-p-361.html?cPath=8_289

What I'm unsure of is how to finish the top. I don't want to use a slab of glass laid over. I'd like to do some version of using lacquer, glaze, finish of some sort to create a thick, clear finish that makes the surface flat (ie. fills i » READ MORE

Repurpose Tea Tins into Charming Pendant Lights

By ModHomeEcTeacher

One sure sign of a creative thinker is to throw some odds and ends in front of them and see what they come up with. (Now wouldn't that be a more constructive premise for a reality show?)  Over on JunkMarket StyleMeretriciousCreation gathered up a number of the many many tea tins that had been stashed away, found some inexpensive prisms at a local hardware store » READ MORE

Retro TV Gone Dry Bar

By ModHomeEcTeacher

It's heartbreaking to come upon, consider and ultimately pass up a behemoth like a fab retro TV cabinet or stereo console due to the logistics of hauling it away and extracting the innards.  Our friends over at ApartmentTherapy  found photos of this clever TV to dry bar conversion that some brave souls u » READ MORE

So you found a fabulous chair by the dumpster. It's unique, solid, and the price was right. What a find! The only problem is that you need to rebuild the entire chair seat, jute webbing and all.

Where do you begin?  This is fairly simple if you can see how it breaks down in three part » READ MORE

How To: Four Lives of a Modern Side Table

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-04-22

Good thrifting advice is to go ahead and buy a piece if it stands out from the ordinary. What stood out about this table? The legs. Modern, sleek, solid wood and sturdy. The supports are also solid and can be used again, I'm sure. The table tops are a composite wood covered with formica and  a plastic band around the edges. See three more very different looks you can get with this $6.99 Goodwill table. » READ MORE
