Yes! You Can Paint a Ceramic Tile Floor

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-07-27

When we bought our house many years ago, one big problem was the big front entry and hallway. They were tiled in a mauve-y purple thick ceramic tile. Mr. Mod had just put down hardwood floors in the large great room and we had them stained and finished by a professional (at that time we lacked DIY know how), and we were tapped out.  » READ MORE

Curbly Recession Busters: Subway Tile Backsplash for Under $95.00

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 10/23/08

My tiling project in the kitchen that cost less than $95.00 and one weekend opens up all sorts of new decorating possibilities.  Constrained by the in-your-face handpainted tiles of a decade ago, there was limited flexibility in color choices. Keeping permanent fixtures neutral and changing up paint, art, and kitchen chair upholstery makes much more sense, both financially and visually.  I even feel a little smug that I'm living with my less-th » READ MORE

Help Me Learn How To Demo and Re-Tile

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 10/16/08

It's time to eliminate my handpainted tiles from the backsplash.  I've never taken down tiles from a vertical surface and we've only put down floor tiles.  Is it possible to get these off without much wall damage and if there is repair, how hard is it?  I am craving some white subway tiles, new paint, new art, reupholstered chairs and THEN I'LL BE HAPPY!!!  If there are any really good tutorials out there for backsplashes, send them my way.  We » READ MORE

How to Make a Mosaic Tiles out of Aluminum Cans

By DIY Maven

Check this out...a very clever crafter cut up a bunch of aluminum cans and made mosaic tiles out of them. She cut them into squares, flattened them out, folded over the edges (to make them ‘safe’) and then nailed the tiles into place with tacks. Fabulous! To find out how she made the frame pictured above, go to Bean-Sprouts. Via Crafty-Crafty.

Basement ceilings (Polystyrene tiles - cheap and dirty)

By faust

Hey everyone,

Recently we moved into new house . And I decided to build a new office for myself in the basement (working from home - dreams come true :-)

It will take a while before we'll finish the whole basement , but for now I just found a nice corner to start from. The walls, floors - everything was done traditional way . The last thing was to decide what to do with the ceilings. One option was to install the drop tiles, but since my ceilin » READ MORE

Ceiling tiles as canvas, and why art teachers ROCK!

By DIY Maven

Have some old ceiling tiles laying around? You might want to think about using them as ‘canvases’. That’s just what art instructor Carrie, known as orangesoc12 on Flickr did. Although, her tiles weren’t just laying around; they were actually in the ceiling of her classroom. She had her 8th grade students take them down and draw on them--using Georgia O'Keeffe for inspiration--and then they put them back up. You can see more examples of he » READ MORE

Giving your kitchen cozier look (with Antique Copper Tin look ceiling tiles)

By faust

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to share with you the details of one of our latest projects. We installed PVC glue on ceiling tile in the kitchen ceilings.

  • First - we snapped a chalk line through the main focal point in that room - light fixture.

At the beginning

  • Then we applied a glue (Contact Cement) to the ceilings along this line with a foam roller

  • Glue was applied to the back of the tile (it is a good idea to apply glue to three-fo » READ MORE

UltraGlas Heat-Reactive Tiles

By Chrisjob

When I was 8, I begged and begged for my parent's to buy me a Hypercolor t-shirt...they refused. Now, I think I'm thankful...though they did insist on buying me a whole drawerful of Ocean Pacific OP gear, so perhaps they were just cruel and weren't operating out of aesthetics.

Anyways, these Ultrabloom Heat-Reactive Tiles are totally sweet...

How to cover those stained drop tiles once and for all

By faust

Hey everyone. Here I'd like to show you how did we covered old ugly drop tiles my friend had in his office with a new ugly ones (at least the new ones weren't stained :)

This was my friend's office before I convinced him to try to cover the stains.

This is how this office's ceiling looked like before we started.

...about half an hour later.

We just attached PVC glue on ceiling tiles to the old drop tiles one by one (used them as a support)

For that purpose we used PL construction adhesive

Hour and a half later. A-ha, here we re » READ MORE

Carpet Just Got Stained? Consider Eco-Carpet!

By gregoryjohnson

Murphy BedIt can be a real pleasure to spend a relaxing evening at home sitting by the fireplace with the love of your life... until you realize that somebody accidentally knocked over a bottle of wine.

You could spend the rest of the night with a can of carpet spray-foam cleaner scrubbing away the stain and arguing over which one of you spilled the bottle. However, if you've ever tried to clean a stain from carpet, you know that often times the spot y » READ MORE
