This is sort of a follow up to my "Painting Trailer Walls" blog. I was so scared to paint my walls because I thought they would peel like a dirty bandaid. And nobody had, to share, a personal account of painting them, so I listened to my husband and accepted that it couldn't be done. About five minutes after that, I changed my mind and went to Home Hardware.
For anyone who wants advice for painting those lousy vinyl covered trailer walls w » READ MORE
How To: Four Lives of a Modern Side Table
By ModHomeEcTeacher
Good thrifting advice is to go ahead and buy a piece if it stands out from the ordinary. What stood out about this table? The legs. Modern, sleek, solid wood and sturdy. The supports are also solid and can be used again, I'm sure. The table tops are a composite wood covered with formica and a plastic band around the edges. See three more very different looks you can get with this $6.99 Goodwill table. » READ MORE

Second Hand So Cal
By erika
When I first moved to California we lived in Oceanside for awhile so I will start there with DAV. We then moved up the coast to San Clemente where you will find Laura's House of Treasures and The Salvation Army , my 2 favorites down there. A little further up the Road you will find a St Vincent dePaul (not the best one tho) and a couple of others not worth mentioning.
Up the 405 to Laguna Hills you will find another St Vincent dePaul.

Who butchered the Baker?
By boopalina and bebe
In August, we helped my dad move into a new home and we subsequently inherited this vintage roadside find. He was going to just leave it behind, but I instantly knew it had incredible design potential. What I didn't know, until finding a little hidden plaque on it, was that it's a Baker cocktail table. If you're wondering what the heck that means...well...you're not alone. I was a bit curious (and Baker-ignorant) so I did wha » READ MORE

How-to: Make a Slipcovered Vase
By ModHomeEcTeacher
This easy tutorial came to my attention through Paper and Stitch when I was googling one of my past tutorials to find sites where it was picked up. Ugh, shameful self-centeredness. Nevertheless, it led me to this simply adorable vase slipcover. I'm considering some vase projects these days, so this will go in my "great ideas" folder. This also makes good use of small fabric scraps or "fat quarters" you may find at a quilt shop or fabric » READ MORE

Go Green, Live Rich
By Ken Hoyt
Leading financial expert David Bach didn't choose his home because it was green. He liked the view and the proximity but he experienced better health and his young son's asthma disappeared. This book, Go Green, Live Rich: 50 Simple Ways to Save the Earth and Get Rich Trying, is the result.

Green, clean coupons
By Ken Hoyt

I like to make many of my home cleaning supplies (in fact, I write about it for Natural Home magazine) and I included a few recipes for DIY home care supplies on this blog. And, like many of us, I try to do my part to reduce pollution.
But I like to have options. I am especially taken with Seventh Generation products. They fully disclose the ingredients in all of their products. Meanwhile, here's a little good news for your budget: they have a » READ MORE
Free Stuff: Books!

They liken this offering, called Browse Inside, to giving the customer a chance to peruse a book much as they would in a bookstore. And they are guessing that you'll purchase the book if you find something you like.
I think it's a great idea, and I'm likely to succ » READ MORE

Free stuff: An earful of style
By Ken Hoyt
Lately, it seems, very chic people have taken to hiring other stylish people to keep themselves au courant. Or, at the least, keeping them wardrobed, primped and styled perfectly.
In my long career I've styled both people and homes, and generally I loved both. I will admit, however, that houses almost never suffer from insuperable pretensions.

Green Scene: Reduce Chemical Dependency

Cleanliness may well be next to Godliness but the way we get there may be taxing to the eco-system. Dry cleaning may make our clothing fresh but the process employs many solvents that are anything but earth friendly.
California recently banned one of the worst offenders, PERC (perchloroethylene), although it may still be in use at your neighborhood cleaners. One alternative, DF-2000, is marketed as a green or organic alternative. However it, too, » READ MORE
