Laundry Room Must Have: Fels-Naptha!

By DIY Maven

Say ‘Fels-Naptha’ to your mom or grandma and see what kind of reaction you get. It will probably something like, ‘Oh, yes! They used to use that in the olden days on laundry day.’ Why the bar soap isn’t still popular today is a mystery, because it is one of the best–if not THE best–pre-treater/spot removers on the planet. I know this because I picked up a bar at my local grocery store a while back to give it a try.

How To Remove Oil Stains from Clothing and Fabric.

By Chrisjob

Somehow, in the gravy making marathon of Thanksgiving 2007, I got splattered with a bit of olive oil. I feared not, however, for I knew there were good tidings of a great DIY solution.

1.Simply lay out your clothing on a flat surface where it won't be disturbed.

2.Liberally sprinkle baby powder onto the spot.

3. Allow it to sit for 24 hours. Shake clean, or use masking tape to remove the powder. If the stain is still present, simply repeat the » READ MORE

By entropy1980 So I am building a desk out of Birch plywood (built-in type deal), I'd like to "seal" it with something, but not stain it, just something thick and clear. Never done anything like this before anyone have any suggestions?

Day 38: I Think We're A-Gonna Hafta Paint 'Er

By egellia
Number one and first of all: I was right. And we all know that is the most important thing.

Darker don’t do diddly.

I bought the darkest Minwax stain I could find in the wee-sized pot. “Dark Walnut.” They didn’t have a sample of it, and you know you can never trust those pictures on the can, but what the hell. I figured I was giving this one final shot – one final half-assed shot, I should say – and then it would be latex time.

Day 31, Project 14: Super Flash

By egellia
So, I don’t know…

I was in bed this morning, with coffee and newspapers -- as any civilized person should be of a sunny Sunday morning -- when suddenly, with no idea how I got there, I found myself in the back hall in some sort of a fugue state with a paintbrush in my hand.

Finished with finishing!

By bruno

Ever wonder what happened to those Fix-It videos? I do. It has been ages since we got up the energy to put one together! But that doesn't mean we haven't been fixing things.

For the last two weeks we've been refinishing our woodwork, and let me tell you, it would've made a great Fix-Its video. Alas, the work was gruelling and left little energy for videography. I'll try to post some before/after and process pics laster on. But for now, here's the » READ MORE

espresso laminate confessions

By bhikkhu

okay, so I screwed up. I started building a platform bed before I had really investigated everything. I planned to have my lumber cut into nice pieces to make it easier to transport and handle. Then I would cover it with a beautiful/modern/trendy espresso veneer, and the seams would be hidden. (I know, veneer makes me a cheapskate, but it's certainly worth the $2,845 I'm saving against the bed I want)

The problem is, I can't find the espresso/bla » READ MORE
