My Cardboard House Remodel

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-10-27

Last week MWT brought home this cute little two-story house with a request that it be remodeled for entry into a 'parade of homes' contest sponsored by the company for which he works. There was no word as to whether prizes will be given out to the best remodel, but, seriously, did I care?! Of course not! It was a teeny house just ready for a makeover! Here's the outcome:

Bright, Cheery Glam Details to Make Your Kitchen Pop

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-10-08

Photo Images: Kevin Oreck, Architect Inc.

It's all in the details. Yesterday CocoCozy, my west coast go-to blog, featured knock out photos by her buddy, L.A. architect Kevin Oreck in her Architect's Tour of a Hollywood Regency Home. Decked out cabinet door trim makes these cabinets supremely cool, the three simple white bowls with red fruit add a colorful splash of friction (other subtle red accents below) and that green upholstery on those Regency chairs...lovely!! » READ MORE

This Old House Reader Remodel Winner

By DIY Maven

Before Photo of the Home

The victim of a very bad remodel, this turreted 1896 Victorian underwent a serious refurb, thanks to Dorian and Elaine Walker who were able to see past all the wrong choices of previous owners. The 'after' of the project speaks for itself.

Budgeting Your Remodel

By MarvinWindows

By Lou Manfredini

Third in a series

In my last two postings, we talked about the architect and the builder and how important it is to get that combination right when starting your remodel. But I suppose the biggest issue is, how are you going to pay for it?

Creating a budget and planning for contingencies is part of any business proposition, and remember: This is business at this point. Now, if you are flush with cash, then return to other par » READ MORE

The Little House That Could

By TijuanaTaxi

created at: 2009-05-24Meet my first house.  It's a little house that's been slightly neglected over the years by the previous owners.  When my realtor showed me the house, I immediately knew that this was a serious contender amongst the other fifty properties I'd seen.  Upon taking a closer look (and smell), I also knew that this little house was going to be become a second job.  Besides the fact that this little house would take a lot in the 'labor of love dept', was » READ MORE

Bungalow Makeover: From Foreclosure to Fabulous

By DIY Maven

Ten industrial sized Dumpsters were filled with the junk that filled Lisa and Todd's 1905 Portland bungalow. It had been inhabited by human and non-human squatters before the couple purchased the forlorn property. The before pictures pretty much sum up the condition of the home, but Lisa & Todd saw past it. They restored it to its former glory, including new hardwood floors, vintage light fixtures and subway tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. T » READ MORE

Pocket Guide to Wallpaper Removal

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 09/19/08

Stripping wallpaper is one of the worst home improvement projects I've ever undertaken.  During each room, I swore I would never hang wallpaper again, but......

"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." Michael Corleone, Godfather III

I daydream about sitting in my favorite chair, journaling (a verb?) about my goals and dreams, in front of a vibrant retro-inspired oversized graphic wallpapered wall.  No, no, no!! I won't do i » READ MORE

What is Deconstruction?

By renew Most do it yourselfers have deconstructed something, whether tjhey used the term or not http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deconstruction_(building) .  Since a wrecking ball is rarely the tool for remodeling, who hasn't laboriously removed sheetrock/plaster and 2x4s to expand a room?  What about saving a built-in corner cabinet or window for a later project?  All over the country businesses have sprung up to fill the need for larger-scale building salv » READ MORE

Has this conversation happened to you too? (Or is it only me...?)

By terryswaler

….

Him:  (proudly) I touched up the spots I missed this morning.

Her:  Good.  Now we don’t have to deal with it tonight!

Him:  Hmmm.  How come I can see where I touched up?

Her:  Must be the lights shining funny.

Him:  Pause.  Oh boy.

Her:  Fear striking.  What?

Him:  I used the primer paint.  Not the ceiling paint.  I’m going to have to re-do the ceiling.

Her:  Silence.  Raised eyebrows.

Her thinking:  “idiot”

Her:  tha » READ MORE

Bath Remodel, During, Suggestions/Advice?

By sparkie

Hi There!  Some of you know I have a whole house to remodel, affectionately named "Former Carnie Crackhead Foreclosed" house.  (I hope no one thought I was the crackhead....ha!)  2nd floor bath is the first room I am concentrating on.  I think I now have a fairly clear image of the expected results.  I am not a designer, but a handicapped-like DIY'er.  (Handicapped cause I seem to have to screw up alot before I finally get it good....plan J or K » READ MORE

Helping Mind

By mglover

I have always loved solving spatial problems. When I was very young I came up with the redesigned for my family's home kitchen and eating area in what seemed like 30 seconds. I might have been 12 yet to me it was such an obvious solution.

The redesign proved perfect for the space and my family. Though out the years I've always had this yearning to either do interiors or architecture but the schools either were uninspiring or I found the actual s » READ MORE

Reno on a '50s rancher: How long is too long?

By amorcitos

My grandmother could've told me that remodels always take at least twice (maybe four times) as long as one plans, and I still wouldn't have believed it.

Heh. Our timeline was, oh, sometime in October for completing our kitchen renovation. It's nearly Christmas, and we haven't even begun. <kermit the frog>Ho hum. In his defense (not naming names), we ended up with lots of dependencies, and that actually was a good thing (till tonight...re » READ MORE

How to Flip a House in 90 Days: Getting Started to Demolition

By DIY Maven

The short version:

Find the money to buy a depressed property in a great location, and then work your behind off.

The long version:

In our case, we exercised a line a credit against the equity in our home to come up with the funds. That only provide for half of what we needed, so we found a guy with cash who was as crazy as we were with whom to partner. We hired a lawyer to draw up an LLC to protect us, financially.

Don’t let the picture of this cu » READ MORE
