By DIY Maven

created on: 07/14/08

Amana's new Jot refrigerator, which has a dry-erase door, is being marketed as the perfect spot to jot a note, but how fun to use--and reuse--your refrigerator door as a 'canvas'? At $649 MSRP, it's probably one of the more inexpensive refrigerators on the market. For more information, visit Amana.

7 Ways to Triple Your Refrigerator's Lifespan.

By Chrisjob

  • Cleaning the dust from your refrigerator's compressor coil once or twice a year will help it last twice, if not three times as long.
    • Use a special coil brush, around $5 from the hardware store
    • Lacking this, use a broom or compressed air.
    • First remove the grill, then clean the coil.
    • Then, clean the grime and dust on the fan blades, then replace the coil.

  • Replace your gasket: if a dollar bill slides freely between the rubber gasket strip and the doo » READ MORE

By DIY Maven

Giving your fridge a facelift with faux leather is easy, according to Heidi Karpa. Materials are minimal and include 4 yards of faux leather, decorative handles (Heidi used towel bars), and decorative magnet clips. The tool list, although longer, includes things most of us already have. They include:

  • tape measure
  • paper and pencil
  • scissors
  • ruler or straight edge
  • no-sew tape
  • iron
  • drill and drill bits
  • screws for towel bars
  • spray adhesive
  • goggles
  • face mask

Refrigerator Shopping?

By Michael

I have to admit, I hate shopping.  Especially shopping for appliances.  But, my wife makes me and the fact that everything in our kitchen is "vintage" and broken, it came time to shop.

So, I dreaded the idea of having to walk into the Circuit City, Best Buy or similar appliance store totally devoid of valuable information.  Luckily, I discovered a great site that helped me with my refrigerator purchase - REFRIGERATORPRO.COM.

How to Make Crafty Fridge Magnets.

By Chrisjob "Food comes in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and packages. Your kitchen cabinets, pantry drawers, and refrigerator shelves are already filled with marvelous little boxes and baggies of goodies. Some of these are cultural icons, others are silly modern wonders of neo-retro design.

You may even have your own little collection of interesting little containers in the form of left-over little boxes of candy from Halloween. What can you do with all th » READ MORE

How to Make Magnet Photo Corners

By DIY Maven

I’ve proclaimed my refrigerator door a ‘pictures only’ area. I wanted a quick, easy and cheap way to make a collage of them. Here's what I came up with.

What you need.

Photo corners (I bought 250 corners for 4 bucks, which I had on hand from another project.)

A sheet of magnet (this is also a great way to recycle those magnetic calendars and business cards you get in the mail.

A scissors

What you do.

It probably goes without saying, but you » READ MORE

Condiment Calendars

By DIY Maven

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Think Geek. I would buy just about anything those sexy techno-freaks have to sell. Except this. The DaysAgo Refrigerator Timer is a button-sized timer that counts down days. The idea is you stick these babies onto your mayonnaise jar, salsa, whatever and let the little LCD screen mark off the days since you opened the container. Now, I’m not saying keeping tabs on the age of your condiments isn’t a good idea. I » READ MORE

Fridge Fixation

By DIY Maven

Okay, admit it. Your refrigerator door looks like a pop art project gone bad. Pictures, postcards, receipts, lotto tickets (both last Wednesday’s loser and next Saturday’s winner), a grocery list, and a friendly reminder from your dentist that it’s time for a checkup. Too important to cast aside in the dark recesses of some drawer only to be forgotten, but not quite important enough for a cubbyhole of its own, junk accumulates for all to see. » READ MORE
