Garbage Day Rescues Get Re-Do

By DIY Maven

dscf3773before

This before and after is the reason why we should all keep our eyes peeled on garbage day. Rescued from the curb-side (they had a 'free' sign attached to them) the chairs fell in to capable hands. The shoddy paint job was sanded down and covered with a black, low-luster, latex. The cracked seats were repaired with glue and clamps and then hidden with a lovely black and white fabric, which was applied with artist's medium. You can see the entire » READ MORE

My New Favorite Polyurethane

By DIY Maven

When it comes to water-based polyurethane, I’ve been a Minwax girl for quite awhile. I started using their Polycrylic because it dried crystal clearly, had low odor and clean-up was a snap. But this weekend when I went to my local hardware store for a fresh can of my old standby, I was introduced to Aqua ZAR and thought I’d give it a try. As soon as I opened the can’s lid, I was impressed. The Aqua Zar was quite a bit thicker than the Minwax, » READ MORE

9 Incredible Bookcase Make-overs

By DIY Maven

BHG has some completely inspiring before and after shots of rather easy bookcase make-overs.

Simple unfinished offerings like this one can be transformed to suit a variety of styles.

First up is the contemporary version. It was stained in a deep ebony and then a roller shade was installed to cover the less tidy bits.

Next it takes a country turn. Shutters were used to create doors. A forge-iron shutter bolt was added to keep them secur » READ MORE

Quick and easy hardware updates!

By DIY Maven

This month's Workbench Magazine has a nice tutorial on how to refinish hardware. BUT you don't have to buy the mag to get the details. Just head on over to this Workbench page and then click on the 'online extras' that appears to the left of the article. Of particular interest is the process of making shiny brass hardware look bronze with brass aging solution.

Helping old tables

By rdougher

I cleaned up and old family endtable and decoupaged a bay chart to the top.  A couple of years later I found a similar table at a garage sale for $2 and did the same to it.  I now have complimentary tables with a nautical theme.  Cool.  created on: 06/26/08created on: 06/26/08

Remnanats Available

By WeatheredStone

Hello everyone!

We have had a lot of requests from installers and diy's if we have any leftover pieces they can use to try out on a small project. Due to the fact that we have a very good quality control there are not enough remnant pieces to give to everyone who want them we decided to post the remnants on eBay. This is a great way to pick up enough product to do a backsplash, piece of furniture, or small foyer. Here is what we currently have ava » READ MORE

Need advice?

By Bjorkfansoph

I need some advice for those in the know? So I hate the finish of my dining room table and chairs, my question is what finish shall I use once I sand everthing down? I'd like to go really dark, should I do this? If you all give advice, can you include a link for me to see the finish you are talking about? Thanks!! Oh, btw, the first photo was taken without a flash and the second one was with a flash.

Style Make Over: Country Conversion

By DIY Maven

The great thing about country-style furniture is it’s falling out of favor, which means you can pick it up for just about nothing. Another thing, it’s almost always made out of real wood–generally pine–which is more than I can say about most of the furniture at IKEA. The not-so-great thing about country-style furniture, is, well, it’s country–not that there’s anything wrong with that if that’s the way you roll, but if you don’t, you’re going to h » READ MORE

Finished with finishing!

By bruno

Ever wonder what happened to those Fix-It videos? I do. It has been ages since we got up the energy to put one together! But that doesn't mean we haven't been fixing things.

For the last two weeks we've been refinishing our woodwork, and let me tell you, it would've made a great Fix-Its video. Alas, the work was gruelling and left little energy for videography. I'll try to post some before/after and process pics laster on. But for now, here's the » READ MORE

Chair Refinishing Project

By frangrit

This project is from last year, when I lived in a teeny-tiny apartment in New York City's East Village. Nonetheless, it's worthwhile endeavor if you find yourself with some dingy old chairs in need of some refinishing love.

In this case, I got the chairs from my grandmother. Though they look kind of cool in the photo, they were actually pretty dirty, and the fabric was stained and smelly. Dan and I decided to repaint the chairs and cover the seats » READ MORE
