Vacation Houseplant Care
By MarvinWindowsWe all enjoy vacations, but it is important to remember to make plans for our houseplants for the time that we are away so that we can return home to healthy plants rather than a heartache. Here are a few tips that you may find effective.
If you don't plan to be away too long, you can help conserve moisture by placing the plants in a location out of the direct sun. This will slow down the growth of the plants and reduce the amount of water they » READ MORE
☼ Grow A Gnome Home
By DestinybyDefinition
I wanted to share my gnome home since it's spring and if you're anything like me, you love unique ideas for potting and planting. I love miniatures so this came as a super~exciting idea to me. I had these cute little gnome dudes in my flower pots inside the house.
My husband recently got into woodwork, and I had him build me the flower box and the little 'house' (a bird house would likely work just as well). I gorilla-glued the rocks and got t » READ MORE

Greening it up this week with a clever little project using old vinyl blinds as your plant markers. Wooden paint stir sticks were my previous favorite, but after two good rains, they're a mess. » READ MORE

Leprechaun Crib
By ModHomeEcTeacher
Why do we love anything in miniature? Maybe because it's so absolutely adorably dinky! Breaking through the undeniable charm of dollhouse interior decor out into the miniature yard and garden is, yet again, some kind of wonderful. Created by John Millman, could this be making ready for leprechauns?

How to Speak the Language of Flowers
By DIY Maven
We all know roses have their own language. Red means love; pink means admiration. But what if you want to get a bit more poetic about your flower selection? For example, what if you want to convey devotion to your best friend...then what kind of flowers would you give? Honeysuckle and heliotrope that's what. To help you speak the language of flowers, visit this page at Santa Cruz Public Libraries for an alphabetized list of flowers-to-emotions » READ MORE
Build Your Own DIY Grow Lights.
By Chrisjob
Sure, you could go to the fancy indoor garden/hydroponics store and buy speciality grow lights that mimic the color spectrum of the sun's rays. Or you can make these LED spikes from Popular Science.... Goodness, even the name sounds cooler. "These bulbs actually work best as a supplement to sunlight during the day; however, they’ll also provide enough light after dark to ensure that your plants get the 12 to 18 hours a day they need to thrive » READ MORE
Instant Gratification: From Seeds to Seedlings in 1 week.
By kestrel
I don't know about you but for me, whenever the days are clear during winter, with the sun shinning and the ground devoid of any greenery , I start planning what I want to plant where come spring. This fanciful pastime just gets worse as the days get warmer and longer. Normally we'd have to wait til March (at least here in PA) before the nurseries start pushing flowers and shrubs. Then, we'd have to wait even more until the chance of frost i » READ MORE
freecycle flower cuttings replanted
By urbanmomSince buying my house, i've dreamed of the landscaping that I want. I can't hire a landscaper, and have no real experience with planting and growing. I got lucky when I got the clippings of mexican petunias, and poor mans orchid from free cycle. I put the petunias around a tree in my front yard with a flower bed around it. I placed the orchid in a front flower bed that will soon also have roses.
The photos were taken with my ipho » READ MORE
Sky Planter: The 21st Century Version of a Hanging Plant
By DIY Maven
A new twist on the macrame hangers of the 1970's, Boskke's Sky Planter is an upside down planter. (Much like the inverted tomato plant idea, I'm guessing.) It locks in the soil so there's no mess below, and because you water from the top down, there's no water lost to evaporation. Its 'internal reservoir system' means you water less often too. A conversation starter, no doubt, that will save precious floor space. Not bad! Via.

Spot the Brilliant Balcony...
By lilybee

Well done my neighbours for making the world a bit better with green. I suspect the folks who live here are actually elves, as they have been able to create a lovely green spot for themselves (and us snoopy neighbours) on their North-facing, 11th floor balcony. Their dash of green vastly improves what may be the worlds ugliest building.
Me and My Not So Green Thumb
By DeborahA tragedy happened in our garden this weekend, as I thoughtlessly plucked off all the flowers on the tomato plants that Daniel and I have been raising since spring. Somehow I got it into my head that in order for the plants to focus on the fruit, I had to pick off the flowers. But what I didn't know then is that tomato plants flower first, and then the fruit begins to appear from underneath the flowers. So basically I killed about 25 tomatoes thi » READ MORE

Plant Powered Air Filter
By DIY Maven
The Bel-Air Plant Powered Living Air Filter gins up our indoor plants' ability to clean the air. With the help of NASA research, French designer Mathiew Lehanneur has outfitted his creation with a fan that draws air into a Pyrex chamber that houses a plant. The air then is filtered through the plants leaves, roots and humidity it generates. Via thegreenhead.com.
Decorate your dirt.
By DIY Maven
Martha has a tip on decorating the dirt of your indoor plants with pebbles. Of course Martha couldn’t just dump the rocks on top like I do; no, she has to arrange them in concentric circles. I must admit, the effect looks pretty cool. I bow to the master.
Greenrrroof Animal Home.
By Chrisjob
These vegetatively-capitaled Greenrrroof pet houses are a beautiful alternative to those Little-Tikes, tan, plastic things they sell at the discount stores. Stephanie Rubin's designs are made of natural cedar, no-VOC paints, and beeswax water sealant. Expensive, yes, but the including diagrams and simple but clever design make them totally DIYable.

How To Start Seedlings in Egg Cartons.
By ChrisjobPaper egg cups make the perfect container for starting seeds and growing transplants.

Simply cut off the top half/the lid of the cartons, and fill each cup with potting soil. Place them on a sheet pan filled with water, and the set the pan in the sunshine or under grow lights. When the seedlings are ready for the garden, just cut the cartons into indiividual cups, and place the whole things in the soil. The cartons will dissolve, just like tho » READ MORE
