Rosie the Riveter Bookends.

By Chrisjob

Fact of the Day:: 20 October 2009.

The iconic "We Can Do It" logo, immortalized on t-shirts, posters, coffee mugs, and avatars everywhere, does NOT depict WWII cultural symbol Rosie the Riveter. From DocsPopuli:

“For the past 60 years, the popular image of the World War II-era female worker in the “We Can Do It” poster has evoked strength and empowerment. The American public identified the image as “Rosie the Riveter,” named for the women who we » READ MORE

How To: Make Your Own Gummy Candy.

By Chrisjob

"Bears and worms aren't very similar, until you think....gummy." -Demetri Martin, These Are Jokes

Yeah, but bears and worms are SO 1922...and 1981.

So, instead, make your own. SFHandyMan has provided a great detailed instructable on creating your own candies out of a DIY silicon mold. He's chosen Legos as his design, and its remarkable how finely sculpted the results are. The details are more defined than in commercial candies!

Harness The Incredible Power Of The Sun... To Make Pretty Pictures

By lilybee

It contains approximately 98% of the total solar system mass, reaches temperatures of 27,000,000° F. and eventually it's going to gobble up the planet, but not not for a while yet.

In the meantime why not make a sun print? They're delicately pretty and they've got that school science experiment thing going on. Nostalgia-tastic.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Blueprint or sun-sensitive paper

  • Cardboard
  • Spoons (or any objects you like: pea » READ MORE

How To: Dye Pasta For Crafting.

By Chrisjob

First, there was just plain old semolina yellow. Then, they got fancy (tacky?) and developed the tri-color by using spinach and tomato products to tint you rotini. Now, embrace the rainbow by coloring your pasta ANY shade you may choose with vibrant, punchy results. This is a great medium for kids, or for some tongue-in-cheek nostalgia...perhaps some macaroni macrame?

Materials

  • food colouring
  • dried pasta of any shape
  • rubbing alcohol

Custom Paper Silhouettes.

By Chrisjob

I remember when I was four or five, and this old lady with a crazy haircut came to out house to draw my silhouette. I had to sit still for-ever... and she made my eyelashes way too long. Hanging on the wall at my grandma's house, always reckoned them sort of tacky, but this contemporary, DIY take from Stu and Janet could go in my house anyday.

Materials

- Good side profile photo

- Scissors or Xacto Knife

- Tracing Paper

Fine Art Created with Crayola Crayons.

By Chrisjob

Tiona Marco is a trained artist, and creates her work with classical line and form. She just happens to do it with Crayola crayons. You know, the same crayons you've been using since you were three.

A far cry from MY KID COULD PAINT THAT, Tiona's efforts aren't abstract, outsider, or even modern. They're traditional in scope, they just happen to be created with, you know, crayons.

Both giclee prints and original works are available.

Floppy Disk-ish Drink Coasters.

By Chrisjob

"We're talking serious attention to detail here - not content with creating coasters shaped like the more common 3.5-inch floppy disks, Supermandolini has gone back even further in time, producing a coaster range including 5.25-inch diskettes.

Yes, we're in the land of 70s computing with the Soft Sector coasters. But this isn't just an exercise in geek, it's really sharp design, with each 9cm x 9cm coaster having its own colourful and indiv » READ MORE

Melted Toy Soldier Bowl.

By Chrisjob

Designer Thorsten Van Elten created the 44" diameter  "War Bowl" from melted plastic soliders. The $225 price tag warrants a DIY attempt: perhaps you could warm the army men in the oven, then flip the softened sheet onto a large bowl for formation? Thanks, BLTD!

Make a Super Mario "Goomba" Beanie.

By Chrisjob

I was fortunate to snag a Nintendo Wii when I was out of the country (still not available in the U.S., right?) and I'm finally building some Wii-mote skills on the marvellous Super Mario Galaxy, which is everybit as fun as Super Mario Brothers for the NES.

And it includes plenty of these goombas for the smashing, but thankfully none of those ducks with the turtle shells.

Grab the goomba hat pattern here.

Atari Controller Candle Stick.

By Chrisjob

" Candles are very seasonal right now - although this Atari 2600 controller candle holder is unlikely to appear on your mum's mantelpiece.

Shaped like the base iconic games controller from Atari's must-have console of the early 80s, it holds your candle - which uncannily looks like the stick.

I'm not sure what this is made of - but with a price of £50, I sense ceramic rather than plastic."

50 GBP? No sir. Go grab a busted controller from the thr » READ MORE

DIY 3-D Viewmaster.

By Chrisjob

An ambituous tinker dubbed Pyrofer has equipped a Viewmaster with twin LCD screens, which project the same image at varied spacing to mimic three dimensional viewing.

"The 3D object is rendered twice with the camera in a different position each time to simulate the spacing between your eyes giving different viewing angles. Each of these seperate images is sent to each of the LCDs, one for the left eye and one for the right. Sat next to each other » READ MORE

Frah-Geeee-Lay.....Must be Italian!

By beccajo

Oh how I love A Christmas Story. According to my father, it was basically a documentary about his life. Substitute the younger brother for three older sisters, and that was his holiday experience. We taped it off the TV when I was a kid and loved to watch it even when it was 88 degrees outside.

This time of year it shows up almost every night on some station, so here's a fun little article on the house where the film was shot. Turns out some dude » READ MORE
