By Chrisjob

The June 1st, 2009 cover of the New Yorker was created entirely (well, minus the text copy) with the Brushes app on an Apple iPhone 3G. From the New Yorker: ""I got a phone in the beginning of February, and I immediately got the program so I could entertain myself," says Colombo, who first published his drawings in The New Yorker in 1994. Colombo has been drawing since he was seven, but he discovered an advantage of digital drawing on a nightti » READ MORE

How To: Make a Book Rack from a Wire Hanger.

By Chrisjob

Here's a clever and useful way to reuse those ineffective wire hangers that come from the dry cleaners: a repositionable book or magazine rack. Don't be alarmed, the instructions are in Portuguese, but the photos make the process clear. Or, if you speak Portuguese, don't be alarmed, because you can read the instructions.

DIY-able Mag Rack Made of Carpet Pad

By DIY Maven

This very cool magazine rack by 54Dean is so DIY-able, I can’t even stand it! It’s made of carpet pad/underlayment that’s been laminated with felt on both sides. The material is then gathered together ‘using flexible cord to snugly hold your magazines.’ Okay, the laminating part might be tricky, but I’m thinking spray adhesive and purchased felt would work. A big old nail to poke some holes through and a couple of bungees, sans the hooks, knott » READ MORE

Curbly in the New Readymade Magazine.

By Chrisjob

Okay, so it's not a featured 8-page article, but Curbly does get a shout-out in the Contributors page in my brief bio (first column, second from the bottom, I think) in the April/May edition of Readymade (Isssue 34). While your there, have a peek at my article, "Been There, Recycled That" in the Re-Organize feature, on pages 40-41.

New Use for an Old Crate

By ZolaClaire

Repurposed Dairy Crate

What is it with bathrooms and reading?  I'm never in this room long enough to do a whole lot of reading myself, but I do know that others enjoy their bathroom time and there's always a stack of magazines sitting on top of the tank just for that occasion.  While the stack is small, it always seems untidy and bothersome because the magazines are too large and they end up poking you in the back.  But let's face it, as long as there's a bathroom in » READ MORE

I Have an Article in the New READYMADE Magazine!

By Chrisjob

If you were to go to your local, well-stocked bookstore, and happened to find Issue 33 of Readymade magazine, you might flip it open and check out all the fascinating articles and some amazing how-tos. And if, in this process, you made your way to pages 58-59 and the "Ready-Whip" column, you'd see a how-to article entitled "Build You Own Butcher Block."

I happened to have written that article. Even more interesting, that's my actual piece in the » READ MORE

Amy Shutt from Day-Lab DIY shares her recent find: mid-century issues of House and Garden Magazine.

"[I pick up] older issues when I come across them at an affordable price and in reading condition:

This particular group contains magazines from 1959 through 1965. And even though I have only had time to flip through them and just scan articles...I am already in love.

42 Design and Technology Magazines to Read

By Chrisjob

Man, I wish my parents had nurtured my limited talent in visual arts when I was a kid, and that I had taken the right classes in high school, and studied graphic design in college, so that I could spend my workweek doing something clever and artsy that others will actually see.

They did not, so I'm happy to have Smashing Magazine's 42 Design/Tech Magazines to Read, which "is supposed to give you an overview of magazines you should read or » READ MORE

Home for the Holidays Gifts (for me!)

By alttext

The Home by Design: Transforming Your House Into a Home book is along the same lines as the book my house is based on The Not So Big House (that's it on the cover, more or less)

My wishlist includes a couple photo related items (of course) and then some magazines and a book that are really great at helping me hone my home design senses and refresh me so I can get some more posts onto Curbly!

  1. A digital frame to show all the photos that don't fit on my photowall.
  2. The Home by Design: Transforming Your House Into a Home book is along the same lines as the book my house is based on The Not So Big House (that's it on the cove » READ MORE
