DIY Starscape Ceiling.

By Chrisjob

after.JPG

It's 2009, and glow-in-the-dark stick-em-up stars simply won't do any more. In the era of accessibility to LEDs, fiber optics, a quite accurate (albeit 2D) home planetarium can be had with a bit of wiring and alot of holes.

From Hack-a-Day: "[Mike Galloway] set out to install a lighted starscape in the ceiling of the baby room...This setup involves an LED based illuminator and bundles of fiber optics. [Mike] first mounted the illuminator in the » READ MORE

Milk Glass LED Lamp

By DIY Maven

These glasses might look like glasses of milk, but they're really night lights. To turn them off, simply turn them upside down or place them on their sides. The acrylic glasses are 5.5" x 3.45" and take 3 "AAA batteries. You can find them at Amazon for about 12 bucks each.

LED Clothespin

By DIY Maven

Designer Sungho Lee's LED clothespin can be pinned to anything that needs a bit of light. Not a lot of light, mind you, but light nonetheless. My first thought was 'Cool book light!' You can see more pics at designboom.

DIY Thread LED Tea Light Cover.

By Chrisjob

threadtealightcover.jpg

From Mrs. Green Tea:"I was messing around with different materials trying to dress up a little LED tealight, and this is one of the versions I ended up liking (plus it’s dirt cheap since it’s just thread!). I love me some textures. This may be useful for those with wedding venues that don’t allow real flames." I'm thinking this thread+fabric stiffener combo might turn out all sorts of charmful things. Build Your Own DIY Grow Lights.

By Chrisjob

Sure, you could go to the fancy indoor garden/hydroponics store and buy speciality grow lights that mimic the color spectrum of the sun's rays. Or you can make these LED spikes from Popular Science.... Goodness, even the name sounds cooler. "These bulbs actually work best as a supplement to sunlight during the day; however, they’ll also provide enough light after dark to ensure that your plants get the 12 to 18 hours a day they need to thrive » READ MORE

DIY: LED Christmas Cards.

By Chrisjob

Those geeky geniuses at EvilMadScientist don't post nearly enough...but everytime they do, they nail it.

Combining an LED throwie, a square of acrylic, and some Christmas cheer, they've created these edge-lit holiday cards that glow and leap off their background.

And it's the kind of tech-y project that should scare ya. Really, I think I'm going to try this one.

Faux Fire

By lilybee

When the weather turns rubbish nothing beats snuggling up in front of a fire, possibly with trashy fiction and preferably with some kind of chocolaty beverage. It's just what winter should be all about. Unfortunately our apartment doesn't have a fireplace so I was forced to improvise...

While technically it wont keep me warm, (except in a cockles-of-my-heart way) it was super easy to make and it makes me smile, and my baby scream with b » READ MORE

Energy Seed generates street light from old batteries

By Doug Aamoth

created on: 10/10/08

What a smart solution to the problem of improper disposal of alkaline batteries! The "Energy Seed" concept comes from designers Sungwoo Park and Sunhee Kim. It's basically a receptacle for old batteries that collectively harnesses the leftover juice from all the batteries that are placed inside and uses it to power an LED street light.

created on: 10/10/08

This is a great idea for just about any environmentally-conscious neighborhood, but I'd actually like one o » READ MORE

Lighting Our Cave of a Hallway

By cillastar

Wireless LED sconces

Our hallway is a hazard. Hazard as in getting up in the middle of the night and bumping one's toe on the way to the bathroom. Unfortunately, there are no outlets or hardwired lights to illuminate the space. I thought about running rope lighting around the ceiling. So glad I decided against it. Too much of a college dorm look for me. Candles don't cut it and running an extension cord wasn't an attractive option. I happened upon these LED lights » READ MORE

Broken Light Bulb LED Lamp

By DIY Maven

The house we lived in when I was a kid had naked light bulbs for ceiling light fixtures. It’s ironic how an unsightly element like a bare bulb can be re-imagined into something quite extraordinary like the Ceci. Available through Generate, the Ceci is ‘a high-powered LED bulb with a hand-blown heat-resistant Pyrex broken bulb lampshade around it.’ Available in limited edition, a signed Ceci bulb will set you back $219 bucks. As a kid who grew » READ MORE

How To: Quick, Easy, and Temporary Garden Lights.

By Chrisjob

lanterns - 11

Solar garden light kits are cool, but can be pricey, permanent, and are just begging to be run over with the lawnmower. So, here's a sweet DIY alternative: "make your own ultra-low cost temporary garden lights using LEDs, lithium coin cells, and mason jars."

Materials

  • Lithium coin cell batteries
  • Ultrabright LEDs with diffused lens
  • Mason jars and lids
  • Tape

Simply attached the LEDs to the batteries, and tape into place. Tape the whole t » READ MORE

LED Floor Captures Digital Footprints.

By Chrisjob

Floor designers Sensacell installed a 250 sq. foot interactive LED floor from 1000 of their LED panels at the 2008 World Expo in Spain. Over time, the floors begin to remember patterns and trails of steps, which will either highlight how often we go to the refridgerator, or remind us of our ecological footprint. One or the other.

LED Shower Light

By DIY Maven

If, for any reason, you've ever showered in the dark, then you'll know just how wicked awesome this LED Shower Light is. From Think Geek, the shower-head-light ($40) fits your standard shower pipe. When you first turn on the shower, the light glows blue, indicating the water is chilly. When the light turns red, it means the water has heated up to a very comfortable 89 degrees. It installs in minutes and there's no batteries needed.
