Making a table from birch logs

By JudithDial

birch log side tableThis how-to really interested me as we have several birch trees we've been contemplating taking down in the yard AND I still need side tables for the livingroom. No storage, but otherwise, I think they're great.

Pointclickhome had this write up about turning a bundle of wood into an attractive, reasonble side table. I'm amazed at the ingenuity of the city dwellers in finding their wood at the flower market. Much cheaper than Conran's $2,000. » READ MORE

How To Upholster a Round Stool

By ModHomeEcTeacher

I've done it. Kicking and screaming I've made a How To video. (shudder) Even though I upholstered this stool on a previous post, I had to re-do the boxing. Someone bought it from my Etsy shop and it's being shipped to Brooklyn today. Nothing shows technique like an actual demonstration.  » READ MORE

How To: Get Intimate With Your Kitchen

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 11/23/08

One way to experience intimacy with your kitchen is to patch holes, prime and paint.  It's the only time your head is literally up in the corner of the walls and ceiling and skimming the floor while you do the painting cut-in work down at the baseboards.  There's no getting around the familiarity after discovering the waves and warps of drywall, hairline cracks at the ceiling line and a little too much gap between the baseboard and wallboard. You discover these endearing qualities of your kitchen after spending long hours together.  Once you know its strengths and weaknesses, you know you'll be able to bring out the best in your kitchen.  » READ MORE

Amazing! And professional! To do this, you need to have a blind hem foot for your sewing machine. Thanks to the Diana Rupp of Make Workshop! Check out her book Sew Everything Workshop! but is it art?

By ricki

bermtower.jpg

I go to art fairs and shows every now and then, where I find myself admiring garden ornaments like totems and towers by ceramic artists. Alas, my budget, after plants, simply will not stretch to include original works of art. But wait! What about all of those odds and ends…lids to jars that have broken, saucers and/or pots with no mates, the wobbly pot that I threw in college (too weird to use, but too significant to throw away). I gather » READ MORE

Repurpose Your Pad

By margaretjane

One of my favorite passtimes as a New Yorker is scouring the sidewalks for trashed furniture.  I have a few rules governing what I will and won' t take.  I adhere most strongly to the Nothing With Stuffing rule.

If you live in an area with a lower housing turnover, your second-hand gems likely come from a flea market  or thrift store.  However you come to aquire your UBF (ugly but functional) old furniture, there are a hundred ways to conv » READ MORE

DIY Moulding!

By erinloechner
I'm loving this idea from Domino online, right here. My husband and I are preparing for a cross-country move eventually [GOODBYE, L.A.!], and I just can't wait to find a house with CHARACTER. Sadly, our house in L.A. is Stucco Central, and I miss the paneling and moulding of the Midwest homes that I grew up in.

Regardless, this is an EXCELLENT tutorial from Domino, and special thnkas to Francois Dischlinger & Mirk for the fabulous photos!

How to Make Oatmeal Soap!

By erinloechner

Oatmeal soap can be a way to help your skin feel smoother and make you smell good. But, sometimes you can't find it in stores when you want it. Now you can make it!

  1. Put a skillet on the stove and turn the stove on medium heat.
  2. Take a bar of unscented soap (or another scent you want with the oatmeal scent) and melt it in the skillet.
  3. Take about a half a cup of oatmeal (put in more if you want a lot in the soap, less if you don't want so much) » READ MORE
