If you're a bonafide Do-It-Yourselfer you can't go one more day without, at the very least, a mini air compressor. Once you experience the ease of pneumatic tools, life as you know it will never be the same.  It's too complicated, you say? Ha! Not after you see step by step how easy it is to rig up for interchangable pneumatic tools. I'm partial to the stapler for upholstery purposes. » READ MORE

Musings on home..

By David Rowtree

Home. The word has a sort of cosy feeling, doesn't it? Warm. Comforting. Safe.

Now think about those instances where the word is used not on it's own but in front of another: home dentistry; home brewing; home improvement; home business; Homeland Security; Home Shopping Network; homework. 'Home' begins to take on quite a different set of connotations there, doesn't it? It starts to imply something dodgy, something amateurish, somethin » READ MORE

DIY Closet Build

By NCavillones

We have that rarest of specimens in a NYC apartment--a walk-in closet. Our only other closet is a narrow affair in the bedroom. Awhile back, we built out the walk-in closet with a Rubbermaid System, in order to better utilize the space. Despite this, my husband's clothes threatened to take over the floor of the closet, mostly because we were using hanging fabric shelves for his clothes, which don't offer much in the way of support. We had the sam » READ MORE

Plumbing of age: what every first-time homeowner should know about the sewer system, part two

By bruno

Roots in the main line are not a pretty sight. Our septic series continues. If you haven’t already, you may want to read the first part, well, first. Part 2: Snakes, worms, and severe burns.

In the morning I awoke with the sudden realization that I couldn’t do the one thing I wanted to do most: use the toilet.

I thought of going outside, but it was broad daylight, and my neighbors are not that friendly.

Bodily fluids are great motivators, though, so, at 7:30 in the morning, I lur » READ MORE

Environmentally Friendly Replacement for Halogen Bulbs...

By roadvermin

I was looking around the Farnell website the other day, as we are renovating our apartment and want to install energy efficient lighting throughout the flat, and I came across these LED replacements for Halogen bulbs. Halogens are notoriously energy hungry, the most common size people have in their homes is typically 50 Watts. I also find they generate a large quantity of heat during operation compared to normal bulbs. They do provide very good l » READ MORE

How To Re-Shingle A Roof (and not die)

By bruno

I had the 'opportunity' to re-roof my garage this summer, and I thought I'd try to save you from some of the trouble I went through.

If you've got a small area to cover, it's a reasonable project to take on. But forewarned: it's hard work. For a smallish garage (about 450 square feet of roof) it took me two full da » READ MORE
