Get 'em while they're young at Make it Ruby

By DIY Maven

My heart leapt with joy this weekend when I heard about a new online magazine called Make it Ruby. The magazine/website features DIY projects and games that are targeted to the tween girl audience, a segment of the population that has been underrepresented, according to Make it Ruby's creators, in the online DIY tutorial world.

How to Make Toilet Paper Origami

By DIY Maven

Toilet paper origami, also called 'toilegami', is practiced in upscale hotels. Basically, the cleaning staff folds the first piece of toilet paper on the roll into a shape. The most popular is the triangle fold, and it's a great way to greet your guests when they visit your bathroom. I do this so-simple -it-doesn't-really-need-instructions fold all the time. But now, thanks to Origami Resource, I'm going to step my toilet paper origami up a notch. From easiest to hardest, here are their T » READ MORE

Today is the first day of the 2009 Minnesota State Fair. If you've never experienced a state fair, especially of the Midwest variety, you really haven't lived. Corn Dogs, Deep-Fried Oreos, Turkey Legs and anything you can think of that can be shoved on a stick...it's that time of year when people forget about cholesterol levels and caloric intake and PIG OUT! Since many of us can't make it to these festivals of food, here are some recipes to help you enjoy the state fair experience at home.

How to make sidewalk chalk out of eggshells.

By DIY Maven

Homemade Sidewalk Chalk

Okay, so sidewalk chalk isn't exactly the most expensive thing in the world, but why buy it when you can make it? And out of eggshells no less! (Mr. Wizard would be so proud.) The procedure is simple and the supplies are minimal to say the least. They include:

Spice up your Profile Pics -- for Free

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-03-13

Profile pics. Grr. You want a good one, meaning one that doesn't make you look goofy. Of course, you don't want one that makes it look as if you're trying to audition for ANTM either. Both of these reasons are probably why I've stuck with Rosie the Riveter for the past 2 1/2 years. But, I digress. If you're looking for a fun change to those pictorial introductions, check out Fun Photo Box. Basically, you pick the photo effect of your choice, up » READ MORE

Fun Fantastical Furniture

By DaiquiriDiva

created at: 2009-02-26

This site may have been posted here once before, but it's one of my favorites and worth checking out again.  Straight Line Designs, based in Vancouver, Canada, designs and builds Alice-in-Wonderland-esque pieces that are both fun and functional.

Bookcases stack haphazardly, like a giant tossed them into the air. Cabinets with names like "Oops" and "Boom" appear to have had run-ins with things wild and wonderful. Others, like Joined at the Hip » READ MORE

Friday Distraction: Virtual Lite Brite

By DIY Maven

created on: 01/23/09

MWT and his at-work homies occasionally suffer from something they call LOI, which stands for Loss of Interest. It seems to hit around 4:30 on Friday afternoons. If you're suffering from a case of the LOI's today, you might want to head on over to Hasbro's virtual Lite Brite page. Simply pick the peg of your choice and pop it into the desired hole. You can even print and share your creation with other victims of LOI.

Toilet Paper Gone Wild!

By DIY Maven

created on: 01/19/09

Who says you can’t find inspiration in a roll of toilet paper? Note that the tissue is pink as well. Since such ‘girly’ t.p. doesn’t appeal to everybody, the same idea against a more colorful background with a white and grey, blue, etcetera t.p. wave could look equally funky and fun as well.

(I've since lost the link to this pic, so my apologies to the originator. If anybody knows who that might be, please leave a comment!)

Curbly Recession Busters: Throwing a Popcorn Tasting Party

By DIY Maven

Last night we had a popcorn tasting. This came about because I was sampling recipes for take-alongs, which are in full bloom these days. As I was shaking my pot and minding the popper, I thought, what a cool idea for a party! Why? Well, popcorn is super cheap. I bought a 4 pound bag of kernels for about 3 bucks. Five pounds of un-popped popcorn makes....well, have you every seen the movie Real Genius? Okay, not that much, but still.

A Few Treehouses

By lilybee

You know what sucks about treehouses? That's right, absolutely NOTHING! From tacked on shacks made of old pallets to grandiose castles made of... money, and every Ewok-inspired leafy perch in between, treehouses are brilliant. They are very essence of summer and childhood distilled,  with winter on the way and a milestone birthday just passed I could use some of both. So, here are a few particularly inspiring examples of what happens when trees and architecture get together and party... some of them considerably nicer than my apartment.
